How to make spare chipped keys

I ordered 2 keys from Amazon and went to Walmart. They cut them for free. One of them didn't cut right, but I managed to file it until it worked. That one is a little tight and after programming both from the first post, they work! Thank you!

Guys, thanks for posting, I'm a new 4Runner owner and the 2007 car I have only came with 1 key/fob. This is really useful and saving me a trip to the dealer!
I ordered fobs from here and I have a quick question. When I go through the programming mode, I get right to the end successfully and then the doors lock/unlock twice. I think this means the remote has not been successfully paired. I've tried several times. Any ideas? Is there a limit on the number of fobs that can be paired with the vehicle and if so how do I do an erase for the fob? I should mention I think the car has an aftermarket security system, it has a remote start fob, but also the original Toyota one which works fine.

You need to repeat steps 6a,6b until it locks once.

All, a quick update, I managed to get the keys cut and programmed up, so I now have 2x spare keys. Managed to get a second fob programmed, but when I tried a 3rd one tonight it caused some issues. All the fobs (whichever I used) then caused the trucks alarm to go off until I started it with one of the keys.
Even locking it manually with the key caused the alarm to go off after a few seconds. I ended up going back into programming mode and matching up my original fob. This solved the issue, so it's working ok now, but will need to re-try the 2nd fob in the morning. Does anyone have any idea of what caused this?
Perhaps I was overzealous with testing my new fobs, locking and unlocking with different fobs too close together? Either way my new spare key works a treat, would just like to make sure I'm not trying to match too many fobs to the vehicle. If you have any ideas let me know!

and followed the instructions in the original post to program the key, which worked great for starting the car. But the weird thing is the two new keys don't work to unlock the car. I tried the driver door and the rear hatch, and the old key works fine, but the two new non-Toyota keys don't work in the door or hatch, and they don't quite work on the glove box. One of the new keys locks the glove box but doesn't unlock it.
Is it possible that there is something wrong with the key itself, or is it the cut? It looks pretty identical, but maybe I need to soften the edges also?

I bought a used 2005 and it only came with one key. That key opens the doors and the glove compartment but will not work the rear hatch window and door what do I need to do. Also it has an after market alarm system ( I think ) and a after market fob can I program a new Toyota fob to work my doors and locks.

The keys were improperly cut, a properly cut key will unlock everything including the ignition even when not programmed, it just will not start the vehicle, i.e. it won't disable the immoblizer because not being programmed.
Who cut the keys?

My local locksmith cut the keys for me, two of them. I also thought the same as you, but I thought what are the chances the keys were cut improperly if both of them don't work to open door, but they do work to start the car? But I also can't find any reason the programming would have anything to do with door lock, so you're probably right. I'll pay the locksmith a visit tomorrow and see if I can get it fixed, but all the keys look so similar to the naked eye!

The ignition and or the door lock tumblers could also be slightly worn or it could be just a matter of hitting the cut portion of the keys with a wire wheel again to get rid of a stray sparp edge, but it could also be the position of the cuts in relationship to the length of the key shaft being slightly off, if that's the case you may be able to determine that by slightly pulling outward and or pushing inwards as you try turning the key, that being said if you have a key that will work both the ignition and the door and it was copied precisely the new keys should also work.
When you take the key/s back to the locksmith make sure you have your T4R there so he can test them to make sure they work correctly!!

No marking on the master key except the dot. they all look the same, groove wise, to me. any way to tell if its a G, H or C key or something else?

Ebay keys for 06 4Runner had problem programming
Just to add hopefully final report on this thread, I looked through all prior from 2011 on up to learn what I needed to get a spare key for my 06 SR5 model. Dealer wanted $350 for just a key so thought no harm buying on Ebay 2 keys and 2 fobs for $19. The fobs programmed just fine using current key using multiple key/driver door opening and closing procedure. The two new keys could not be programmed since the current key wouldn't initiate programming mode. Before reading more on the topic I had a locksmith try and he couldn't get them to program either using his special computer. So he cut me a new master key. He said he had many reports of Ebay keys not being good. After reviewing Toyota service bulletin that describes how to tell a valet from master key (valet lights up immobilizer for 2 seconds when inserted) I took my new master key to truck along with the Ebay keys. It was then obvious my old key was a valet. I used the new master key and was able to successfully program the two Ebay keys into extra master keys using the key insertion/door openings procedure for keys. So it wasn't as inexpensive as I hoped but at least it was much less than the dealers cost for just one key.

I recently came across this and did my research both on here and on various other forums.
Some said that it has to be programmed by a dealer/locksmith and some said that only the keys with a small dot near the end of the key blade works. Some also mentioned that walmart/home depot would cut the key.
However most of those information might not be the truth based on my experience. I'm willing to provide a small guide on this for those in need.
How to get a key blank
I bought the key blank from a seller on Amazon and there was no small dot on the key blade at all but it works.Those found on ebay might also work.
So just buy the cheapest one which says "for 03-09 4runner"
Should be less than 20 bucks shipped.
How to cut
I at first went to walmart but they refused to cut it because I didn't buy the key blank from them. Home depot and lowe's did the same thing.
So I asked a local locksmith and he did it for just 5 bucks. (just FYI those keys are made of brass, not steel, so most locksmiths would be able to cut them.)
How to program
Actually it's a super easy if you still have one master key that can start your 4runner. There was a pdf somewhere about how to do it on a Prado but
its not very clear(it would ask you to remove the key from ignition 3 times without mentioning putting it back in at all) so I'll try to provide a clearer one here:
1. Take the new key and one master key that can start your 4runner(old key) into the 4runner with you and close the driver's door.(immobilizer light should be blinking)
2. Insert old key, remove old key, Insert old key, remove old key,
Insert old key, remove old key, Insert old key, remove old key,
Insert old key (immobilizer light should be off from the first insertion)
3. open and close driver's door six times (immobilizer light should be off)
Step 2 and 3 need to be done in less than 35 seconds(pdf says 35 seconds)
4.remove the old key. (immobilizer light should come on(steady on, not blinking))
5. insert the new key(immobilizer light should be blinking)
Then just sit there and wait, after about one minute the blinking immobilizer light should go off and you're done.
Whole process need to be repeated for any additional keys, the just programmed key could be used as the "old key" for the additional keys.
If there are 5 master keys registered with the immobilizer, it won't accept any more(and I don't know how would it tell you this, so just do a erase if you can't get it to work after trying for a few times). You have to erase them using a similar method(bring in just an old key, insert+remove one more time and open+close one more time, after the 7th close of the driver's door the immobilizer light will stay lighted for one second, remove the old key quickly after that and all but that one you just removed are erased.)
If you don't have any working master key(meaning you only have valet keys). Then I've no idea what could you do other than ask for help from a dealership.
Total cost is less than $25 if you still have at least 1 working master key. Less than 1/5 of what my local dealership wants.
Hope this would be useful for those in need, please post your results if you decided to give this a try.
This was awesome info. I got a pair of keys off of FleaBay and was able to program them for my 2005 V8 4Runner, HOWEVER, I ran in to some issues along the way. I was unable to program the new keys the first several times, before I figured out what was wrong. Turns out that my driver's door plunger switch - the one that turns on the dome light and makes the chiming sound when the key is in ignition was faulty. It would only intermittently work. So, I cycled the switch by hand a bunch of times and figured out how to manipulate the switch to control the dome light and the chime sound.
So, once that was done, I followed the procedure above to the T, but instead of opening/closing the door, I reached back and cycled the door closed plunger switch such that I heard 6 chimes for door open, then held the plunger down as if the door was closed and was able to program my two new keys.
Bottom line: if your door closed plunger switch is "sticky", you many have to futz with it to get the correct door open/closed cycles to program a new key. Just FYI
