How to: Never worry about CV boots again - BOOT SLIDE MOD

Howsit going everyone,
Now I didnt take too much pictures because if you don't know how to remove a CV shaft, you probably shouldn't tackle this on your own.

***This mod, extends the CV boot, expanding the gap between the CV boot fins, thus, reducing the fact that the fins will touch, rub, and tear.***


The process is exactly the same as if you were changing just the boot. (Unclipping the two C-clips that hold the tripod bearing).

HOWEVER!!!

BEFORE you remove the old boot, keep the outer clamp on.

Next - take a razor blade, and cut the OLD boot so it looks like the picture below, and discard the rest of the old boot.

It should now look like the picture.




Take the new boot & slide the outer (smaller side) over the old clamp ( this may take a little persuasion).

The OLD boot and clamp are currently in the CV groove, acting like a lock, so the new boot cannot slide back into a closer, original position.

Once the new boot has been slid over the old boot/clamp, you may now clamp it to the shaft.

Now all that is left is to reassemble (which is the exact steps as taking it apart but in reverse)

I was gunna ask if you made a how to on ig lol, so you basically sliding the new boot over the old clamp which extends the boot further out? You extend both boots on each shaft?

Hahaha, like I said, the video never come out good (couldnt hear the words...stupid gopro housing).

But yeah, just slide the new boot over and put a clamp on the new boot also.

Just the inner boot. I never did break a outer boot...I have grenaded a joint tho lol

After years running them like this, with zero issues, my boots are cracking from age and not rubbing.

Ahh, I figure do one because when I started sliding boots on my tacoma in 2010, there was always "that one" picture missing, that I needed clarification on the most. Lol.

The picture is on the first post.

I should've circled it, but, look at the first post. Almost directly underneath my left hand, is a piece of the old boot and clamp still on the CV shaft. Thats the amount of old boot you want to leave on.

I had to replace my cv's in july, and read about stretching the boot.

I stretched the inboard boot in my passenger side CV, left the driver side one alone.

By the last week of september, the stretched boot had torn. Got it disassembled, cleaned and rebooted this past weekend.

I have found only one company that makes a long travel CV boot for the Inboard cv joint. I plan to reboot bothends of each of my cv's with these in the spring.

Just did this mod, looks good. Just need to drive it to make sure the inner boot doesn't slide back.

So, my inner cv boot is torn basically at the exact spot that this writeup says to cut it, I wonder if, at least temporarily I could stretch the old cv boot over the part with the clamp and clamp it down with a hose clamp, anybody done something like this or think it would work, or not work? If this works I wouldnt have to buy anything new other than a hose clamp and i could do it on the car without disassembling anything so it would save a ton of time and money, repacking grease in through the small end might be a pain but should work I think?
