Hi MDT4RNR, I followed your instructions today for adding a remote to my 2003 V8 SE, and it worked like a charm. I didn't even had to reprogram the originals.

i tried in this thread but must have messed up a step, these were simpler to follow and i got it first try

Get in the drivers side of the vehicle, make sure all the doors are closed except the drivers side door and all the door locks are unlocked.
Insert the key into the ignition without turning and remove it quickly
Insert the key into the ignition without turning and remove it quickly
Close the drivers side door, then open it.
Close the drivers side door, then open it.
Insert the key into the ignition without turning it and remove it quickly.
Close the drivers side door, then open it.
Close the drivers side door, then open it.
Insert key into the ignition (do not remove, do not turn).
Close the drivers side door.
Turn key to “On”, then to “Off”
Remove the key
Vehicle locks should lock and then unlock to signify programming mode. If not, repeat above steps.
Press and hold “Lock” and “Unlock” on the keyless entry remote simultaneously for 2 seconds.
Let go of the buttons and quickly press the “Lock” button (by itself) on the keyless entry remote and hold it for 2 seconds.
Doors should lock and unlock to signify successful programming
Repeat 2 previous steps to program additional remotes
Open the drivers side door to exit programming mode.

So, what does it mean when in the last step it locks and unlocks twice and each time I repeat it the same thing happens? It won't accept the remote for some reason...

6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Press the lock and unlock buttons on the remtoe simutaneously for 1.5 seconds.
B. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons,
Press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds. Within 3 seconds, the door
locks should lock and then unlock once indicating successful programming. If

not accepted.
C. Repeat steps A and B in step 6 for each new remote.

Maybe there is a list stored in the ecu of previously stored remotes and I need to delete them before I can add a new one? Not sure if this is the case...but if its possible to remove the old remotes I'd like to know how so I can give it a shot again

Yes I talked with the dealer and they said the ecu can only hold 5 keys. If all the "slots" are full an all new programming is necessary.

I have edited/updated this info a bit - it took me a while to get it to program. Part of it was because the # of remotes was full and I had to clear and learn how to do that. The other important part is in bold also - I was holding the lock and unlock buttons together too long and it wouldn't program. After I realized I might be holding it too long, it worked the first time.

Hope this may help some others. It was annoying for me, especially since this isn't the first time I have programmed key fobs.

I don't mean to dig up a super old post, but I used tollboothwilley's modified directions to clear the old remotes and add two new ones and it worked like a charm!

both key fobs stopped, same time

I cannot find any posts on where to go next, if both key fobs stop working simultaneously.
Neither one will program, after carefully following the above posted steps. I tried both procedures several times each, including power reset by disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes and trying again.

Last week, (likely unrelated coincidence), I brought it (to Toyota, because it was free) in for a brake system firmware recall. I suspect they reprogrammed the ECU entirely to accomplish the brake related change in the firmware. It feels like it runs differently as if it was re-chipped like I did with my 1990 4Runner back in the day. I can't help but wonder if that is somehow related.

The key fobs worked for several days following the service.
Then yesterday they ceased to function.

I perform the programming steps and it never results in the cycling of the door locks to indicate success to that point.

I have check some fuses that appear to be related, according to the TSB for troubleshooting the keyless entry system.

But if someone can offer what fuses to check I can be sure I checked all associated fuses to rule them out.

That leaves the possible cause of the module that receives the fob transmission.

I hesitate to involve the (stealer) dealer. And shops want infinite troubleshooting time authorized in order to explore the depth of my pockets.

Any clues to offer would be greatly appreciated.

Has anyone come across any issues where the locks didn't cycle after entering the programming steps? I had an electrical issue that I didn't want to pay $2k to fix because I wasn't sure it was being diagnosed properly, but the shop I took it to did get some of the issues that weren't working back to mostly functional. That said, the locks cycled to indicate going into programming mode before this "repair" and now they don't. Any suggestions?

Thanks! This works perfectly for my 03 SR5. The other methods haven’t worked for me.

I also bought 2 key fobs from Ebay but my directions were different:
2003-2005 4Runner, Rav4
1. Drivers door open, key removed from ignition switch
2. Within 5 sec insert and remove key from ignition switch twice
3. Within 40 sec close and open driver's door twice
4. Insert and remove key from ignition switch
5. Within 40 sec close and open driver's door twice
6. Insert key into ignition switch and close driver's door
7. Switch ignition ON and OFF once to program a remote transmitter while retaining the original codes. Switch ignition ON and OFF twice to program remote transmitters while erasing the original code. (Three times to check how many remotes are currently registered)
8. Remove key from ignition switch
9. System should now lock and unlock vehicle. Once, twice or five times depending on which mode has been selected. One to four times, slowly, to indicate how many remotes are registered
10. Within 40 sec press and hold remote transmitter's LOCK and UNLOCK buttons together for 1.5 sec and release.
11. Within 3 sec press remote lock button
12. System should now LOCK and UNLOCK vehicle. Once to confirm registration, twice to indicate programming has failed
13. Within 40 sec repeat steps 10-12 to program additional remote transmitters. Up to 4 remote transmitters can be programmed.
14. To exit programming mode open the driver's door
Note: pay careful attention to the timing of the intervals especially in steps 10 and 11. Holding the buttons too long or too short will cause the programming to fail. Multiple attempts might be necessary.

I actually had to try several times. The real problem was step 10. I found that holding the buttons for just over 1 second worked best. Who actually thought it necessary to have the programmer hold the buttons for between 1 and 1.5 seconds? Why not between 1 and 5 seconds?

So i bought new fobs off ebay. Have one old OEM fob and one new one programmed.

OEM works fine.

Ebay fob worked when i first programmed it. Lock, unlock, tailgate window, panic. But at some point the tailgate window button stopped working for the window, now when i press it the horns starts beeping and lights flash- like panic mode.

I thought maybe i had hit the panic button on the back, but tried it again and same thing- tailgate button starts panic mode now.

Could this be a programming issue? Or is it the fob itself? I wanna say its the fob with bad connections or something but hopefully somebody can give me an educated opinion?
