**HOW TO: Properly Aim Projector Headlights**

I honestly don't know why I haven't thought about posting this before. It seems like more and more retrofits are popping up on people's rigs so I thought I would create this thread to do a few things:
- help people get the most out of their new and probably pricey headlight mod
- ensure you aren't blinding oncoming drivers with all of your "new" lumens (yes, you can still blind people with projectors - if aimed incorrectly)
- make it an EASY thread to follow, so you can do it yourself in a short amount of time

Here it goes:

How to Aim Your Projector Headlights


- by following this guide I am in no way taking responsibility for the retrofit performed on your rig whether correct or incorrect, the final light output, and/or any accidents or mishaps that may occur from blinding oncoming drivers due to the results of this headlight modification
- I am simply providing a GUIDE as to how these lights should be set up to fall, in/close to what I have researched to be, DOT requirements.

Tools needed: Masking tape, measuring tape, Philips (forget the number, can someone please verify? I think its a #5??)

1) Find a flat wide wall (preferably white - cause it looks the coolest:D) with a flat parking surface in front of it. You need about ~40 feet of space behind the wall to move your vehicle around. Grocery stores/warehouses etc. often work great.

2) Measure from the ground to the height of the center of the projector. Call this measurement "X"

As seen below - let's call it 40"

3) Take the height of "X" and transfer it onto the wall with a piece of masking tape - call this "M1"

Ignore my beam pattern here... that green tape line is 40" off the ground despite the crappy camera angle:

4) Now measure down 2 inches from the "M1", and place another piece of masking tape - call this "M2"

*note: if your vehicle is lifted or has a "raked" suspension, such as my own, it may be a good idea to measure down 3-4 inches instead of the 2" mentioned above depending on the specs of your vehicle. Remember, a higher vehicle's light output will fall higher on oncoming traffic. It may not be required but I myself, do this as a courtesy. Even at 4" of beam drop, you still have a VERY useable beam pattern.

Here I have 4" of drop to account for the lift. When I load the truck up for wheeling/camping, the rear will "squat" and therefore raise the beam height to around the 2" drop mark. Again, I could raise them higher, but these measurements suite my truck and my needs perfectly - and I'm not a d*** to other drivers.

5) Now, measure 25ft back from the wall on the ground (perpendicular to your marks on the wall) and mark it with masking tape.

6) Move your vehicle so that it is perpendicular to the wall at the 25ft. mark you just created. Your headlights should be in-line with the 25ft mark on the ground - meaning your vehicle is aimed, shining it's headlights, 25 feet away from the flat wall ahead.

Notice the blue tape mark - you'll have to trust that it's 25 ft. from the wall

7) Now, using the headlight height adjustment screws, adjust BOTH headlights so that the "top" of each cutoff is even with "M2" in terms of height. Both cutoffs should now overlap in the center making it appear that there is just ONE "step" in the light output, despite each projector having an individual "step" in their beam pattern alone.

Here is where you slide your Philips screwdriver down into the headlight adjustment gears

8) Your final output should look similar to this - Notice how the top of BOTH beams are hitting the top of the "M2" blue tape mark on the wall

Now that you have your height set, you can now set how far apart the two beams are. The 2nd adjustment screw on your headlight assemblies (usually the top one that is easiest to access) will adjust the beams Horizontal Movement (NOT rotational alignment, two different things). The Horizontal Movement is the adjustment of the distance between the left and right beam in relation to one another, along the horizontal line "M2". This part is not as finicky and really is user-preference. However the rule of thumb is to have the 2 cutoff steps to be 3-4ft apart from each other on the horizontal plane. Obviously if your vehicle is wider, you'll be closer to that 4ft mark, but on the 3rd gen 4Runners, you should be closer to the 3ft mark. Sorry, no photos of this but it is pretty self explanatory.

This guide provides a great place to start for fine-tuning your vertical alignment. If you find you are unhappy with the output and adjustment after this procedure, tweak the height incrimentally to suite your personal preference. Please be mindful of the laws in your area and other road users.

Thanks, I'm not trying to become a millionaire with this business so, the way I see it, I'll help spread my projector and HID knowledge as best as I can. People are going to do retrofits themselves no matter what (just like any other thing we do to our trucks). So hopefully I can provide some good info, and help their projects come out better. Besides, having a good reputation goes a long way and I'm sure if anyone out there wants to get a retrofit done professionally, there are quite a few people who would gladly direct those people my way for the job! At least I hope it comes full circle.... haha

Oregon's aiming was a pain in the arse to find because it all said to "take it to a certified collision center for adjustment" but info eventually was found! 2.5 inches down@ 25ft forward from the center height of headlight measurements, glad our fred-myer parking lot is flat! what another pain in the ass to find a flat area 25ft long!

the FX-R Bi-xenon projetors i put on her where the best single improvement i've done yet, cus the OEM headlights are GARBAGE!

I would assume that the main principles apply to aiming stock headlights. With the most intense part of the beam being substituted for the cutoff? Or actually you would probably want the intense part lower then where a projector cutoff would be.

I agree... it's touch to find a suitable location to do this. The ground must be flat to give accurate results! Like I also said, a white wall is prefered as it's easier to identify the beams IMO (and it looks cooler), but I could only find this ugly tan wall, so it had to suffice.

2.5" is probably SAE (or something...) requirements which some states will abide by. The law will be different everywhere, which is why mine are even aimed a little lower than normal.

Agreed, projectors are one of the best and most practical mods you can do if you spend a significant amount of time driving your 4Runner at night.

Your correct. However you would still want the "top" of the beam on your halogens to act as the top of the cutoff would on your projectors. Although finding the "top" of the beam on your halogens may be kind of tricky.... especially if you have a drop-in HID kit - the "tops" will not exist.:50cal:
 
I eventualy aimed mine lower aswell, if I remember correctly it's at 32 or 33 inches at 25 ft now..... was getting flashed at by more then just the ricers....

Yah it's a good idea to have them a little lower on lifted applications. If I had a car, they would be as high as I could legally have them.

I've never been flashed on the highway with my current setup/height. Keep in mind there are a lot of people who are bitter towards the "HID crowd" haha. I find lots of "uneducated people," often see my truck with the lights on and say "Your ones of THOSE people" - referring to the drop-in HID guys. I simply inform them that they have no idea what they are talking about.... hahah

BTW, these are a set of rickashay's projector retrofits. if anyone reading this is curious about the easiest way to get a kickass set of lights for your truck, LET RICKASHAY DO IT!! install was great and plug and play, workmanship is top notch. for once i cant wait till it gets dark!
 
I vow to never again use a halogen bulb headlamp... All my vehicles now are HID and I'm never looking back. I'm just glad the TSX came with a pretty decent factory set ;)

Man, those look great on your truck Josh! The color scheme goes great with your new bumpers, wheels, and awesome roof rack! Stoked.

Just the tutorial I needed as I've been meaning to adjust my headlights again. Thanks Addison, once again helping all of us noobs out.

I read on HIDPlanet that you want the two steps to be headlight distance apart at 20ft, is that correct? Is there another distance you use?

Np Rob. ^That's a good point above. It's debatable, and in my experience doesn't have a huge affect on the overall output. I definitely don't think that aspect is as critical as the height adjustment, but I would take SCRunner's comment as a good baseline and use that when setting up your lights.

Ok, I have mine a bit closer and wasn't sure if it is hindering my performance.

Nah, should be fine. Mine are sightly closer than that as well. It will just mean your total "hotspot" is more centrally focused. You technically could increase the width of your total output by spreading the headlights further apart, but that would be at the cost of light dispersion in the center focal point - where the beams overlap.

Ha, its hard to beat a honda 4 banger / 6spd without exploding hybrid batteries for the MPG's... Car is completely stock, less an intake. Will not be changing.
