How to tell if your timing chain is needing to be replaced

Someone told me that it sounds like my timing chain is on its way out on my 22re. It's in a 95 4runner. He says he thinks its going because of the way it sounds. A slight ticking/ slapping?

The truck does have 337k KM's.

Could be valve noise, the 22re is noisy. I haven't done it, but I believe you can take off your valve cover and peer down inside the timing cover to see if your guides are still intact.

If you're at 337,000 km and don't know when the chain was serviced last, I'd do it on general principles.

It does make a slapping sound. When I first heard mine doing that I thought it might have been something like my shroud hitting my fan.
If you do replace it, get steel guides. They are way more durable than te stock plastic ones and quieter too.

Remove the valve cover and pull on the chain, if it has noticeable slack, it's time to replace the set.

Good info, I need to do this at some point. I was told be a Toyota mechanic that if it sounds like a diesel when idling, probably needs a timing chain.
