How's the TRD Pro suspension?

I am consider getting a suspension upgrade, but I couldn't decide of one.

One easy choice will be to get the TRD pro suspension package.

Can one of you who have a lot more knowledge on suspension please school me on this? Should or should I not get the TRD suspension?

Is there lift?

The big question is, what to you want to achieve with a different suspension (lift, increase in stiffness/softness, body roll, etc.)? That will tell you if the TRDPro suspension is a move in the right direction.

this is one of those clear cases where the "easy" choice isn't necessarily the right one.

keep your money in your pocket for now and school yourself by browsing the Lift thread until your eyes are swimming and your mind's made up.

I want a luxury car ride on street/freeway, while being capable offroads.

I read the "lift thread", and my brain was spinning, I just don't understand most of what was said in that thread to even try to make a decision. This is a clear case of "I dont know what I want". :ybrick:

I am probably willing to spend around $1.5K installed for a system.

Kind of in this position myself, but have never enjoyed a luxury car ride. When I test drove the 4Runner Trail, it felt positively civilized.

I've done a lot of research, and I'll either go with the TRD, because it's engineered for the 4Runner, or the Bilstein BTS .. 6112 system, and engineered appropriately also.

One thing that doesnt seem to get discussed very often is durability. Id be curious what the general estimates are from one kit to another, Icon may be great but if it needs to be rebuilt in half the time it may not be better for some folks.

OP, that budget seems more like Bilstein range versus TRD or other adjustable coilovers. Anything is going to be an upgrade from stock off road and many would say on road is as good or better depending on what you start with.

Look over the Toytec site as well as they may have some options that may work for you.

What exactly is a luxury car feel? If you mean soft as s**t then leave it stock. Any lift you put on it will make it somewhat stiffer cause you don't want a mushy lifted suv.

Maybe I should rephrase.....

On the road, I kind of like how my BMW X5 feels..... the suspension is nice and tight and not bouncy.... it corners well @ speed.... is that achievable?

Now, for offroad, I don't know what I need..... took the X5 out to some sand dunes once..... got stuck within 10min.....

Maybe you should start by telling us which 4R you have and what exactly what you don't like about the current set up.

BTW, I know of no suspension that would help you not get stuck on sand.

For those of you who have gone from stock to just 5100s, what did it do to the ride/handling? Are the Bilsteins stiffer than stock? Does it improve roll/dive?

OP, this might be what you're looking for... And, FWIW, you can adjust front height w/the 5100s.

2015 SR5P stock setup, brand new. ODO hasn't break 500 yet.

The "stuck on sand" comment is meant to indicate that I do not have much "offroad" experience with the BMW X5, since, it's probably not designed to do any.

OK, at least we have a starting point. I usually advise new owners to leave all stock for a while until you start learning how you will be using the truck and exactly what components need to be upgraded. Honestly the stock suspension is very good for 95% of people. Will your off roading be more than this? If not, leave it along because they were all done in a rented bone stock SR5. Note that it getting stuck was more because that class was teaching the spotter how to spot, which he obviously sucked at and not the fault of the truck.

Is there anything specific you don’t like about your current suspension?

About the X5 and sand, I think you hit the nail on the head by saying it was more likely inexperience than the truck.

I'll add my $.02

Having the TRD Pro suspension myself I would say I'm super happy with its performance (other than the cold-weather clunk we are all trying to figure out, but that will eventually get resolved).

I have taken it for a 20 mile off-road, snow-covered mountain trail ride. Never did I bottom out or have a wheel hanging in the air. Of-course my truck was only two months old (and was/is my daily driver) when I did that so I was also going very carefully.

On the road it's fairly comfortable, I would describe it as "busy" on harsh pavement but by all means solid. Not the best on corners at speed though. My 2004 SR5 (bone stock) handled corners with less roll (it was lower to the ground too from age and just lower originally anyway). with the 2015 I have slowed down from taking highway off-ramps at 50mph due to the said amount of roll.

I don't have the discipline like most on this forum to put away money and get an aftermarket suspension. Plus I need the vehicle to get to work and such so that I can't leave it a shop for the installation either.

Having said that, I got the TRD Pro because the mods were included/done (port installed) and factory warranty covered it.

If I did not have the suspension on it already I would go for the aftermarket Toytec or Icon setups but that's going to require more research on your part as to getting the desired amount of lift, stiffness etc. The good thing is that a phone call to those folks will get you the setup you want based on your described needs.

$1,500.00 might be a little slim though to spend on after-market setup. You will soon after want to put on new wheels or at the very least more off-road capable tires which will certainly double the cost.

So my two-cents...if it didn't already come with the TRD Pro suspension I would suggest putting the money into an aftermarket setup. Additionally those setups give you more height adjustment options built in.

Good luck! Hope you enjoy some more off-road time in your 4Runner! It's a great time...for the driver at-least!
