Howto: Install right side steering wheel controls

I installed the ribbon cable years ago, but the BT buttons never worked nor did they ever light up. This was in 2010. I've since gotten a new ribbon cable, so we'll see. It has worked for many, but for me and some other member (can't remember who) it didn't.

I wanted to get the Scion NAV, but I have JBL, so I scrapped the idea.

To keep this thread alive, I got another ribbon cable and properly installed it. My BT buttons work and light up. Yee Haaw!

I am thinking about getting a Pioneer NEX series head unit with Car Play. Did anyone get these controls to work? Would be really nice to have the Bluetooth button on the wheel for taking calls with Car Play. Apple just released an update for CarPlay that even lets you syncs wirelessly now.

You have to get some adaptor (PAC or something like that) to get the BT buttons to work on an aftermarket HU.

Thanks again for the write up you did a few months back. Seems pretty straight forward. I am pretty confident the controls will work with the 2013 Scion touchscreen unit. Installing the RHS buttons is really really easy. It takes no more than 5 minutes working slowly. I have no idea why some suggest you must disconnect the battery ... the airbag isn't going to go off; it's staying connected. You just loosen the two side airbag bolts and it pulls off, and just rest it in top of the steering wheel until you're done.

I put the buttons in a 2003, together with a PAC unit, for an aftermarket radio. But obviously if you want to get one of those Scion-type OEMish units the buttons will work perfect for that. All you have to do to see if the buttons are installed correctly is look at whether they light up when the headlights go on. If so, you're all set. If not, the ribbon cable isn't fully seated -- just try again until you hear a little click.

This is difficulty 1 on a scale of 1 to 10. Tools needed: Torx T30 driver; Phillips-head screwdriver; plastic panel tool (to pop the little covers on each side of the steering column); opposed thumbs.

what does the right side control, mine only has controls on the left

models that have Navi have hands free phone controls, if you add an aftermarket unit you can add the controls to have that clean OEM look.
