Huge Problem (2005 SR5)

I am hoping that someone can help me with this issue because it's a big one.

I needed to replace a couple small bulbs in the climate control area. I have done this before, no biggie. Took out the climate control, replaced the bulbs, put it back as per usual. Then it hit the fan.

I could not turn on the blower. I could not set any temperatures. I could not turn on the defrost. The lights all worked and the clock in the LCD works. Nothing else. No mileage indicator. No temperature. Nothing. Also, my airbag light came on the dash too.

Please, someone give me a hand with this. I live in WI and it is started to get cold here and I need my heater and defrost to work very soon.

Alright. I will check them a little bit closer. See whats up. Thanks for the help. I just looked up the cost of a new climate control console and its almost a grand. I cant afford that.

it shouldn't be. IIRC they can be had for 75-300 on ebay.

you *shouldnt* have to replace it. Sounds like some blown fuse to me :confused:
 
Thank you Z. I appreciate it. I looked them up on the interwebs and I can get one cheaper than a grand like you mentioned. Some are really run down and arent in very good condition, looks wise. It's just so odd that the clock works and the lights turn on for the 3 fan/temp dials, but no response. Plus, no range on the LCD either. Very odd. I hope it's only a fuse.

also, you sure the plug is fully pushed in?
 
I third the plug but pull out the plg and check for bent pins and look a at the back of the connector for wires that have pushed out
 
I checked the plug. That was actually the first thing I checked. No bent pins anywhere. No detached circuitry either. Everything looked fine. Brought it into the stealer, they say that the whole climate control console is shot and needs to be replaced (of course they would). I asked if I could watch what the mechanic was doing so I can make sure he checked the things I asked him to check. Nope. Would not let me back there to see. For all I know, they just went right to the most expensive option and said thats what I need. Over $1250 for a new one. Not buying it. Checking ebay. Any other website people know where this part can be sold at a reasonable price?

Paying $1200 for that is insane. I replaced mine for about $100 ( i think, i can't remember). It was cheap and it worked. Anyway, make sure of a couple of things:

1) year (you have a 2005 which means the "passenger airbag" light has different circuitry. In 2005, Toyota had "smarter" airbags. Moral: don't get 2003-2004.
2) Obviously: don't get dual climate control.
3) Do you have a CD player with JBL or not? Some radios with JBL are more "flush" while others are positioned "inwards" toward the dash. It's a tiny detail, but the HVAC panel is different. You won't notice it until you install it and notice it doesn't line up perfectly. It will drive you nuts. .............. been there, done that.

$1200 is insanity since they said it would take 30 minutes to install which is still BS because its only screw and a couple clips. 5 minutes tops. They just want to squeeze every penny out of the customer. I bought a second hand one on Ebay last night for $150. May or may not work, either way, I can return it for a full refund if it does work. It has some nicks in it, but the one I have now is in better condition. I plan on swapping out the scuffed parts with cleaner ones. If all else fails and I need a new one, I did find a genuine Toyota one online for $900. A lot, but $300 less than the stealer. I hope that this one works. As far as it lining up, I can live with it. I love it, but I will appreciate it working more than the looks of it (for now ;)). I appreciate all the input on this everyone.
 
To anyone that cares, I got my used climate control in today. It works for the most part. All the LCD things light up and tell me whats going on. The dials all light up and work. The only thing is that the rear defrost and air cabin recycle don't work thanks to a complete broken circuit board in there. Anyone who has taken this thing apart knows that there is a separate board for those 2 things. Well, that chip is shattered in 2. I know that the one I had in the "burnt out" one works since I heard a click when I turned on the defrost. Does anyone think I can bring it to a electrician and have them swap out these circuit boards or is it too much of a gamble? Let me know what you think.
 
Okay I am in the exact same situation. Two days ago I took the climate control panel to replace a few lights also. When I plugged it all back and none of the controls work. I still have all the back lighting and The clock. Just like the original poster I do not have any of the blower control or any of the controls for the climate control. my air bag light is also on. All fuses are Good. Can anybody explain how to check all the different related relays because I cannot afford to replace all of them as a trial if this does not fix the scenario.

Interesting enough I also had the check engine light and the Vsc light...it. Threw the p0031 and p0051 codes. I did zero point calibration as described in the sticky thread and that cleared the check engine light and the VSC light. But I still have the airbag light next to the speedometer and none of the climate control buttons work, it's sure hot in Florida to not have air conditioning! I'm at a loss here. Something else that is weird is the lights on the speedometer panel do not go out even if the headlights are turned off lol.

Any ideas?
 
The dash lights are on all the time.
As stated above, double check that the plug in the back is fully seated. It's odd that it would fail simply by unplugging it. I've had mine removed several times with no problems. In fact it's out now for some electrical work in that area. Um.... ah..... oh oh, hope I didn't jinx myself!
 
The harness is seated...like we said ...all the lights on the hvac panel work (yay this is why we screwed with it in the first place)...it's just now nothing else works lol.

its not hard to solder but if you have a small electronic repair shop around it might not cost too much to have them do it..
