Hydrolic assist broken on trunk door- plz help

Over the last few days my trunk door has been harder to open and heavier when closing. I'm guessing the two hydrolic bars are broken but the truck is only 2 years old. Is this an easy fix to replace myself?

Its a pretty simple removal of a c-clip and then just pull them off the stud. Gobi sells a replacement unit that is stronger in case you are considering adding their rear ladder at some point.

This is probably a dumb question. When looking online for a replacement, how do I know if it will fit the 4runner? I can't seem to find the Gobi lift supports but advanced auto has a bunch online. I just can't seem to find if it will work on the 4runner.

If this happened to my 2010, out of wty, I'd sure go talk to my SM. This is premature failure ... can't hurt to try.

I'm at 40k miles so warranty won't cover it. I found Monroe 901446 Max-Lift Hatch Lift Support on amazon. I can't seem to find any OEM parts online for the 2010 but the Monroe fit most other 4runner models. I'm hoping they fit the 2010.

The Toyota part number for the stock "back door damper stay sub-assembly" is 68907 (right) and 68908 (left). I'm not sure what the sub-part extension number is for just the damper alone but google should find it. However, as others have mentioned, check out the Gobi ones. They're stronger than stock.

Monroe 901446's are listed for 1996-2002 3rd Gen 4runners. I doubt they will work for a 5th Gens' . Maybe call Monroe to see if they have ones to fit your 4runner.

SoCalTrail came up with a cheaper alternative,but they are probably stiffer then stock ........... Upgraded Rear Hatch Struts / Gas Springs

Thanks everyone! Monroe doesn't make one for the 2010. I'm going to try SOcalTrail's method and hope they fit.

I removed the C clips from the top and bottom of each old support. You can then just pull them off. Each is attached via a ball joint. They came off pretty easily. Then you just pop the new ones in there. Takes about 10 minutes and saves you a lot of $!
