Hydrolocked.

I had to drive through this to get to my house yesterday... bone stock...

Tho i turned around when it got up to my headlights... didn't want to risk it...

if its been sitting this long water will not spurt or spray out of the plug holes, it will have by now drained down into the oil and be sitting at the bottom of the pan. drain the oil into a clear container so you can see the layers if they are any, and report back what you find. also pull the plugs to manually rotate the motor over with a breaker bar to "feel" for damage, trust me, you will not damage anything further by doing this. pulling the plugs will do two things, allow the motor to turn over without building any compression so it will be relatively easy to do so, and allow you to visually inspect each piston and some of the cylinder for damage. -im not trying to insult your intelligence only offering this for others later who might have the same issue and giving them the tools or step by steps to look at and do...

OK, basically just to humor you (and myself) I just went to the garage, pulled the plugs, tried to spin the motor with the starter first.... Clank. Pulled dipstick, just fresh oil (had it changed two weeks ago) no water. Spun motor by hand. (Crank pulley is a 19mm BTW) stops in both directions just about 1/2 way through cycle and there is a distinct clanking from the passenger side of the block when it stops. I pulled on it so hard (knowing I couldn't cause anymore damage than was/is already done) so hard the front end started to come up. Suffice it to say I'm going with a broken/severely bent rod. When I pull it this weekend I'll do a small teardown (oil pan) and check for carnage. And trust me, the puddle was shallow, as I've said before I am more perplexed than anyone. Any who, I'll report back once I pull it. But she's dead, temporarily until the heart transplant is complete. Hopefully this hurricane staves off otherwise this won't be too fun.

Did you ever figure out how your stock intake sucked up so much water? To the point where the ISR was full of water?

Well the 3.4 has been known to throw rods for no apparent reason, though its fairly rare, but its really its only "major" death sentence item the this motor has to watch out for... I'd stl like to see what's at the bottom of the pan, ie water... As water is heavier that oil it will sit at the bottom and not show up on the dip stick...

That's why I'm stumped. I really can't explain it, I just know it happened and won't happen again. Upside though (there has to be some upside right?) Is that the new (to me) engine just had its timing belt/wp done at the local dealer 4months ago (OE parts ftw) only has 104k miles. Vehicle was rear ended last month so no damage to engine. Sucks I've gotta do a motor pull, but if def isn't the first time in my life and won't be the last... I love what you do for me, Toyota.

Motor swaps in these aren't that bad actually. Biggest ***** is removing the inspection cover bolts and then removing the bolts in the flex plate.

Based on your most recent posts, I'd guess you threw a rod but I don't think it's related to your puddle crossing. Coincidence at best.

Actually that was quite easy. Finished up last night, new engine runs like a top. Number 4 Rod broke in old engine for those that wanted to know what happened.

pics to come later

do you have the dekplate mod done ? That could explain how water got in the intake? Or maybe your fender skirts were messed up, allowing water to come into the intake tube?

fender skirt was tweaked a tad, looked enough to let in a good amount of water. Thats the only thing I can think. No deckplate or any mods at all, for now lol. I did take the time to do a new rear main seal, v/c gaskets, pcv/grommet, plugs/wires, timing belt/wp/tensioner, drive belts, fuel filter, fresh oil and filter (obviously) fresh coolant (obviously) so I should be set for quite a long time, no more water for me, thats for damn sure lol

you threw a rod man, you DID NOT hydrolock it... if you had hydrolocked it you would have had water all over in the motor when you took it appart.

-i have pored a fair amount of water into motors with a lot more miles on them to "steam clean" the tops of pistons and valves ect... its an old trick that old school guys would do to help clean off carbon and other deposits and build up on motors back in the day... take a cup full of water and slowly poor it down into the carburetor, the engine will choke a little and sputter some, but the key is to not drown out the motor or stall it. the heat from the motor will steam the water as it reaches the combustion chamber and will help break up buildup....

if you had enough water in your motor to literally fill a cylinder and stop it breaking a rod then youd have water in your pan and other places.

like others have said, water crossings are not that uncommon with us, most of us dont have snorkels. a lot of us who wheel our trucks have gone through water at least up to the bumper, and im sure even more have run through deep puddles at speed spraying walls of water 10-20' high, and not gotten hydrolocked. hell i have had water over my head lights before i had my snorkel and didnt have a problem. -sense my snorkel i have had water over the mirrors -not gonna do it again if i can help it, the power of water will move mountains, not to mention a 4runner.

you had shitty luck with a busted rod, you ran through a puddle and got some water up in the intake tube, but the water did not cause your breakage id bet money on it

Uh, 3 of the cylinders were full of water, I never said that they weren't. sorry that I just typed a quick response without much detail, but with the upper intake removed it was clear to see that the entire drivers side bank had water in the cylinders, oil was still just oil during removal. I'm impressed that the rings could hold that well. So as I suspected, it was hydrolock causing a broken rod.

In Charleston our streets are flooded all the time, but i try not to drive through it , because its mostly saltwater and that's terrible for corrosion!!

:worthless

Yup,I belive it as well. I don't understand how it got that much water in there but it's a moot point now. Like I said earlier,I hyrolocked a 22re years ago, pumped a ton of water out of the cylinders. Truck drove fine for about 2 weeks. Was on the highway going down a hill and the truck acted like I stepped hard on the brakes,me and my passenger actually went forward. Then,BLAMMMOO!! Smoke everywhere, got it off the road, hole in side of black where rod exited.

If that is truly the case then the "puddle" has to have been deeper than you said it was. You driving through it and splashing water up is not going to submerge the air intake.

Either your the unluckiest unfortunate bastard here or we're not getting all the details to what really happened... Cus I find it VERY hard to believe a 1 ft. (or even lower) puddle at "fast" speed caused you to get so much water past the elbow, past the elbow filter, past the intake box, past the intake box filter, past the intake silencer, past the throttle body, and finally into the motor. It just doesn't make any sense.

Ok, to ALL of you who are sitting there pretty much flat out accusing me of being a liar.

First off, this will be my last damn post in this thread if not this entire forum (shy of maybe the for sale section or local area thread). I simply have not encountered in all my years of being on forums (10+ including being a moderator on a much larger one) so much rudeness, disrespect and out and out flaming of a new member who is just simply sharing his situation. In this thread 3 3/4 of the 4 pages are people accusing me of lying about how it happened and being hostile when I state that there isnt a reason for a lie 1st and not my style 2nd. Good luck to you all, keep running off people and this place will go far.

To those that actually offered some constructive advise without being an ashhole about it, thanks.

first off let me apologize for seaming accusatory, that was not my intent. we just find it hard to believe that is all, and when you leave out some of the bigger details like 3 of the cylinders were full of water... can you see how we are like "um.... yeah thats not right..."

i dont think anyone is flaming you -if you want to see true flaming check out pirate4x4, those guys a ruthless and total pricks.

new member or old member its not gonna matter, we are gonna treat you one and the same. most of us here are straight shooters, we call it how we see it and we are all willing to help and go out of our way to help -if we didnt care we all would have ignored the thread. sometimes over the internet the intent of things said gets lost as you can only read words, not tone of voice, or sarcastic input or body language... we are not mean or vindictive and for the most part if someone wrongs another person they admit it and try to make it right. i dont think your gonna find a better more in depth form for your 4runner with as much as this sight has to offer and the experience each person here has to offer.

apparently you have just had some shitty luck with your runner and that sucks man, id hate to have to replace a motor at under 150k mi.

hope this new motor lasts you the rest of the vehicles life, good luck man

I have this problem when texting the gf.. She always thinks I'm out to get her when in reality she just reads it wrong lol.

To the OP. I wasn't trying to make you feel attacked. I think we are all just in awe as it doesn't seem possible to do what you did. In your case, I guess you are just an unlucky unfortunate bastard! That's meant as sarcasm, not in disrespect. Regardless, it sucks. Don't be deter'd by some of the things we say, no one is intentionally out to get you around here. Occasionally we run across pricks or dumb-asses who have it coming to them. I don't think you're either. As you can tell from this thread, we all love to see proof which in most cases requires lots of details and pictures!
