Hyundai Veloster Turbo R-Spec......

It has come to the point that I'm looking around for a daily driver that is fun and good on gas and fun to drive, has to be a manual trans too. As the title says this is what I went and test drove. I was thinking this or a Honda Civic Si, The Ford ST or what ever it is called now, and a few others.

First impression- It was fun to drive and much bigger in the car than I thought it would be. The transmission was very smooth and the short throw shifter was great. It was not as peppy as I thought it would be but when it spooled up it was not bad at all.

So the question is this- Who has one on T4R and what are the thoughts on this little guy.

Maybe not what you want to hear but my wife wants to get rid of her turbo Saab for the turbo Veloster. I think they are badass little hatches. I used to own a FA5 Civic Si, and while it was a fun car, not fast, just quick. And of course not much in the way of low end power when you have an 8200 rpm redline.

Somehow I just can't picture u in one of these Brian! But I understand where ur comin from. What about a BRZ/FRS? It's what my sons are drooling over. Tons of aftermarket stuff too..$$$!!!

I would suggest a brz or a frs or maybe wait a bit longer to see if bmw and toyota came with a more powerful model

Someone in my office has a Veloster Turbo. I remember him saying earlier in the year that in comparing a turbo vs. non turbo, it was liking comparing a rabbit vs. a turtle off the starting line. But what sold him was the price. He test drove a BRZ and while he liked it, he couldn't get the numbers to work for him.

The BRZ is nice but just too expensive for what one gets. Might as well save some more pennies and opt for the STI.

It is a nice little car for the $$$$$. That is what got me. There others I like but after a down payment I would finance around 14k or less. Easy day.

The FRS just has way better lines than the Hyundai, which is kinda goofy looking. That and it's front wheel drive. I saw that top gear episode, the FRS, being RWD, owned it. The valooster has that FWD push, whereas the BRZ/FRS is able to be throttle steered. My sons co- worker has the FRS with Bilstein suspension and an HKS blower that looks factory it's so clean. I know u like to mod stuff Blue, so that's something to consider. :rockon:

I was checking these out as well. I keep bouncing back and forth between something cheap to throw around or getting what I really want. The problem is that I just don't drive much anymore so it's hard to justify any additional expense, let alone a large one. At this price, I think that's the one to get. If you are looking new and would consider dropping a little more, I would also look at the 2015 GTI, FR-S, and the WRX.

If you want to make an impulsive decision, go drive a Civic Si. I did that a few years ago... it was gutless and the dash was awkwardly huge. Simply unexciting unless you want to dump some $$ into it. I passed a Nissan dealership about a mile away and bought a 350Z on the spot. :nod:

What are the differences in the Turbo and the Turbo R?

The main difference is the suspension set up on them. Other than that the Turbo has more bells and whistles. I'm not interested in nav, sun roof etc. I just want a fun little put around town car I can commute in that is still good on gas and fun to drive, I do 100 miles a day round trip.

Ricer with too much money. I've seen some beautifully done BRZ/FR-S cars and that is not one of them. Why? I'm sure there is an 'illest" or "hella flush" decal on there somewhere :der:

Honda finally put the K24 in the Civic Si (2.4L vs the 2.0L they used for years), and the difference is night and day. The old 2L made 197 hp and only 139 ft lbs of torque, whereas the 2012+ makes 204 hp and 170 ft lbs...big difference. I don't have a Civic Si, but my wife has a 2012 Acura TSX wagon with the same engine and it feels pretty torquey even though it's much heavier than a Civic Si. Hondas run forever.

That said, those are all fun cars you mentioned. You might also want to add the Hyundai Genesis coupe to your search. I think it looks better than the Veloster and is rear drive.

I guess Blue it lies in how much money you want to spend.

My coworker (just works in the same building as I) just showed me his Turbo. What sold him was the bang for the buck deal. If the BRZ was $5000 less, he would have bought it all day. But the Subaru dealer in MD was offering zero financial flexibility. He is hoping to be in a WRX though within two years after his second child gets to elementary school.

The Veloster is a little quirky to look at, but overall I think you would like it. I see may 2012+ Si Civics here in DC. Sells well. Not many Focus GTs.

Go out there and drive them all.

What about a VW golf GTI or Golf-R? The gti is a nice car, it's got good pep, good gas mileage, and it's turbo charged.

Meh, this just puts it more in line with the tC, which is still almost $4K less.
