"I didn't hit your car"

My other thread reminded me of this... I don't think I posted about it here. A few days after we picked up our 4R this year we went out to an early dinner. When we got there, the parking lot was empty so I got a nice spot next to a curb up front. When we came out about an hour later I notice the car on the other side is very close to our 4R. When I get close I can see that it's touching... and that our bumper cover is pressing inward. :mad:



So I go inside and tell the manager to find the owner. A few minutes later this big ol dude in a cut off shirt and trunks waddles over. First thing he says is "I didn't hit your car" in his raspy new yorker voice. I reply, "okay, well lets go outside and take a look". So we get out there, he sees the car and still says he didn't hit it.... wtf. We were there before them (they had just sat down and no food yet), he was over the line, and clearly in the wrong.

I made him back up and checked for damage. If there was damage I was going to make it a point to ruin his evening since he was such a **** about it. Why not just own up to your mistake and apologize?

So after he walks away in a huff, his wife, who was very sweet, sincerely apologized and apologized for him being rude and explained they were just trying to hurry in to avoid the rain. That was about the only satisfaction I got out of this, sadly.

I stopped at the local Costco two weeks ago with my 2012 4Runner. By the way, Costco's parking spots are very wide to allow room for their oversized shopping carts. Well, after a brief 10 minute shop, I came out to find my right rear panel scuffed up. I don't need to say how pissed I was. No note, not apology, someone just hit it and took off! I was able to rub out most of the paint that was left on the panel from the other vehicle, although two deep scratches remain.
 
When I first started taking my truck off road a month after I got it people thought I was crazy and asked if I was worried about denting or scratching it. My answer was always that it would either get dented off road or in a parking lot and at least off road I'm having fun. So far I've had more damage from other drivers (woman on ativan rear ended me at a red light, hit and run in a parking lot) than on the trail.
 
It is amazing of the arrogance of people. My car has been hit 2 times now within the 9 months that I have owned it. First was a 3 months after I bought it. It was a hit and run at the school that I work at by a county maintenance van. No note or anything, but I was smart and checked the cameras. The other one was an idiot on his phone last week who stalled his POS car at a stop light and rolled backwards into my truck. Same thing happened, "I didn't hit you, I rolled into you" is what he said. How I did not punch him I don't know.
 
I had similar experience about 6 years ago. Immediately right after I parked , the car suddenly jolted!!! Someone just rear ended my car. I came out to talk to the other driver. She said she did not hit my car. So I asked her to have a look and still refuses to admit. After she backed out, I showed her the mark left on the bumber. It was really deep mark caused by her plate's screw. So instead of apologizing, what I got was "what do you want me do do then?" and left... I hold me temper as she was an old woman, probably in her 80s. :sobbing:

I carry a screw driver like valve core remover just for that purpose. I need to get some little envelopes so I can put the cores in them and attach to windscreen under the wipers else stay out of parking lots.
 
I've had a similar experience with my RAV4. I was living at an apartment with a parking lot at the time, and 2 months after I got the car new massive dents started appearing on the passenger side. Over the course of the 2 years that I spent at this place 3 more dents appeared, deep enough for crack the sheet metal of the door.

It was obvious it was my neighbor in his Cadillac Escalade doing it: the door moldings aligned perfectly with the dents, but I couldn't prove it and didn't catch him in the act.

My T4R is due in early November and I'm hoping there won't be problems but it seems inevitable: new vehicles are targets. Maybe it's jealousy, maybe rudeness, maybe even just plain stupidity on the part of others but damage happens and happens fast. Well, I have my own garage now so maybe it'll last more than 2 months this time :thumb3:
