I found the key to unlocking your 3rd Gens mileage

What type if intake are you running Nunyabiz? Hopefully not aftermarket that will actually decrease power..

Ahhhh no they don't. That's just not accurate.

Aftermarket CAI or Deck Plate Mod when used with a high flow exhaust usually gains about 5 HP at the wheels.

K&N has dyno results on their website. I've posted them before and will hunt them down.

I have an AiRaid Jr with the no oil filter.

AIRAID® - Jr. Kit - 2002 Toyota 4Runner Air Intake

I feel just a wee bit more giddy up it seems while getting on the highway or passing. Engine certainly breathes a bit better as my throttle response is quicker.
I also changed the muffler to a Borla Turbo XL.

I run with my deck plate mod open all the time now also.

Btw, in my experience a scangauge has helped my mileage more than anything else. I can see when I'm hitting the gas too hard and back off. If i can keep the tps between 15 and 17 i get the best mileage. Its amazing watching someone else drive the car, and at the same speed i drive, they are at 19-20 tps and returning 1-2mpg less than i am, same truck. Basically, drive how cruise control works, just enough throttle to maintain your desired speed.

It depends which intake you are running. If its the k&n fipk its been shown to loose power vs modified stock box. I'm sure most other intakes have similar results. I wouldn't buy any if those bogus figures k&n is selling on there complete intake.

Now if its a k&n drop in filter with modified stock box that's okay

The Test Results:

During this set of dyno testing I compared all different configurations with the air box. I seal the opening I cut in the front of the air box and ran it. I then removed the "elbow" and ran it. Then I removed the temporary cover sealing the hole I cut in the front of the box and ran it. I then remove the air box and tested the FIPK. Specs below taken from gadgets site!

Configuration and Results: *Note- runs with the stock air-box used a replacement drop in K&N filter and the stock AFM*

Configuration

1st

2nd

3rd

Run 9 Stock Box No Front 173.3 HP 205.5 HP 210.8 HP
Run 8 Stock Box No Elbow 170.7 HP 205.1 HP 210.8 HP
Run 7 Stock Box 168.8 HP 199.5 HP 201.8 HP

My results showed that opening the front of the air box made the most power, followed extremely close by just removing the elbow. These two configurations and the completely stock box beat the FIPK.

Run 9 Stock Box No Front 173.3 HP 205.5 HP 208.6 HP
Run 7 Stock Box 168.8 HP 199.5 HP 202.2 HP
Run 6 K&N FIPK 169.4 HP 202.3 HP 199.0 HP
This is the test that is sure to get some folks upset. Performance products is selling the K&N FIPK for $219. The K&N FIPK beats the stock box by .6 HP in 1st, 2.8 in 2nd, but looses to the stock box by 3.2 in 3rd for an average loss of .06 HP.

Now if you just cut open the front of the box you get 6.4 HP over the stock box for free or 9.6 over the K&N FIPK. Remember from the previous chart you will get basically the same results by removing the elbow as cutting open the box. I think this might be the way to go so you can pop it back in if you decide to go swimming

The moral to the story.

When a measurement produces a surprising result, start with the way the measurement was made when looking for an explanation.

Don't teach this principle to the woman in your life.

What website was this from?

Also note that I am talking about a COLD AIR INTAKE (aka a CONE) and not a drop in filter.

That clearly is not a 4Runner as NO non-SC V6 96-02 4Runner gets 205 HP at the wheels.

Gadget's 4Runner

Go to google and type in gadget 4runner. If you haven't heard of him you need to review his site. This run was on a trd supercharged 4runner but supercharger or not either way you want to look at it your loosing hp with a underhood intake kit vs the stock setup! And if be very suprised if a CAI put out any noticable hp over the elbow removed with k&n dropin. Why do you think just about everyone on here is running a deck plate or elbow removed.

Well I still have the stock airbox I got rid of the old K&N because apparently they don't make one that actually fits a 4Runner, you have to use some hinky little frame to get a very skinny filter to fit.
The filter that comes with the AiRaid kit is very similar to the Amsoil one.

I have the deckplate mod that opens up the airbox and the rest of it is just a pipe that gets rid of that restrictive silencer box, basically its just a nice ISR mod.

Things I know for a fact are that I am getting between 1-2 extra MPG on the highway and that my throttle response is much better.
Obviously I have to be getting considerably better air flow and I can feel a bit more or at least smoother power.

What it does on a Dyno I have no idea and personally couldn't give a shyte, been well worth it just for the improved MPG alone.
Then I have better throttle response and a better air filter.

It appears that any possible "power loss" when changing intakes are really just with Superchargers because they need larger injectors to handle the better air flow.
But with a stock engine it appears a deck plate mod, ISR mod or AiRaid kit with a better filter is a win win.

It's only the full intake kits with cone filter such as k&n fipk, injen where your removing the stock box that's loosing power. Yours isn't a true cai if your deckplate is open as that's drawing in warm air. I've thought about replacing the intake tube with air aid or similar ISR but have heard the gains are minimal if any and its just more noise.

I gained 1-2mpg, on one long trip a few months ago I saved approx $147 in just 27 days.
I paid $158 for it thus by now it has already paid for itself.

I can not think of another single bolt on item that pays for itself.
That is hardly a "minimal gain" IMO.

Slightly more noise, nothing obnoxious at all though

yep, i agree with this.
having an instant readout is great, has helped me bump my average mileage up considerably.

How the hell does this post get 5 pages??!?

Because it's so controversial!...

How the hell did Obama get re-elected?

Because he's so controversial!.....

Everybody has an opinion on how to gain mpg's
There is not one simple thing that gives great results in gas mileage, if there was everybody would be getting 22 mpg.

As for Obama well lets just say :censored::redbrick::noidea::toilet::infidel::flipoff::help:

Keep adding after it clicks off full to the tune of 2 to 3 gallons, and your charcoal canister is going to hate start to hate you. I've seen older folks do this a few times. They bring their vehicles in for "cutting off when coming to a stop", after filling up. What happens is when the purge valve opens to let the engine consume fuel vapor, but instead liquid form fuel is introduced, the engine can't deal with the unmetered fuel, and it floods out.

He said that to say it was consistent each time with the amount of gallons added. Over the 60k miles i had my red 4runner i never had an issue with the charcoal canister and i would top it off to the brim each time. Havent had an issue with the new truck either (13k miles).

I think he meant the lucas fuel injection cleaner is what did the trick, which i have added before and its not done anything for me. Oil changes, fuel filter changes, and plugs and wires tend to make the biggest difference for me obviously driving habits are the biggest way to change fuel economy, i generally get 19-22mpg driving on backroads and on windy/hilly highways doing 70-75mph.

On the contrary. Not counting all the gas is simple and gives great results every time.

Kinda like when I find 5bucks in the wash, I somehow feel 5bucks richer but it was mine to begin with?

I tried that today. I stopped counting after the first 6 gallons, and by my 'new math' calculations, I got just over 50 mpg. :D
