RE: the RTV silicone on the diff.... I sure wish I would have went that route when I did my E-locker swap as I now am leaking slightly via the OEM "paper" gasket. Not stoked about pulling the third and re-doing the seal.

I bought the paper gasket from the dealer, and when I was getting ready to drop in the 3rd I spent about a half hour hemming and hawing about which way to go. Paper? RTV? Both? Finally I decided that since all the write-ups I'd seen on E-locker swaps used RTV, I'd probably be fine using it too. Add to that one of the writeups mentions that they used the paper gasket and had a leak immediately.

I'm never stoked about doing things twice myself, especially pulling the 3rd to re-do a seal.

I envy you.

Envy not my friend. You're a young guy, your time will come soon. When I was in college I had my Supra with a few basic mods... I used to get on Supra boards and drool at the setups that guys with some cash flow were running. Went to college, got a little older, got a little cash flow. Here I am today.

I'm working graveyards this week, which leaves me with 4 days where I can't go fishing, but I've still got 4-5 hours each day of free time before work.

I got a few errands done this morning, and at 1pm I was sitting in front of my computer, looking at T4R.org... there were no new threads. I was bored.

So....

I yanked these in anticipation of the CBI arriving soon...

But that only took 20 minutes, so I said what the hell, lets get this damn axle swap going already... So I started tearing it down.

Pulled the axles, and what do you know? My axle seals were leaking. That's a surprise!!! :ybrick:

I haven't knocked the drums off yet, but if the brakes are dry I'm going to re-install everyting as is, and run it with the new seals until I have an issue. I'm pretty sure this was just a slow leak on the seals, but I'll check the new ones periodically. The bearings still run smooth and quiet.

2.5 hours later... my 4Runner pooped out it's rear axle

The '01-'02's are definitely a little more tricky when it comes to dropping the axle. I had the '96 junkyard axle out in under an hour. You can see in this picture, there's quite a bit to remove.

I think it's feeling unloved..

I rolled the new axle under the truck, and tomorrow it gets bolted into it's new home.

Nice! Well, the axle seals leaking aren't nice. At this point, it's a fact: the factory rear axle seal design SUCKS. This shouldn't be a part that needs replaced this often in order to function correctly.


Looking forward to you finishing this project, it's been a great one. Perfect for future reference for me, if I ever find an elocked 3rd and want to put it under my rig.

I think I had been to a dinner party that night before posting so the night cap was blurring my vision. Nice fish. Here in the Atlantic, the near shore fish are waiting for the bait fish to mature so they can eat them at the moment. No tight lines for me.

That diff fluid almost look green. What brand are you using?

I had two helpers with me to put my axle into place with the locker in it and it was still a bear. Good luck with all of it.

The seals that are in the original axle are of the old design, so it makes sense that they're leaking. I doubt they've ever been changed.

I'm looking forward to it too. It would/could have been done a long time ago, but I kept talking myself into waiting for the CBI. Boredom and free time will do things to your decision making process though.

The night cap explains it. I figured as much. The diff fluid is Redline Synthetic 75w-90. I think the LED from my camera just made it look a little greenish. It's honey colored like any other gear oil.

I wish I had some help w/this project, but I don't know alot of local gearheads. All the gearheads I know are on this forum. I've gotten pretty good at creative maneuvering with my floor jack.

That's correct. Wiring is 100%, I just have to connect the plug @ the differential. It should be up and running by the time I go to work tomorrow... I just need to get some new tubing for my brake bleeder.

I got a wild hair, and just had to get it done. That's how it goes sometimes. When the CBI comes in though, I have a feeling I will NEED a hand. I'm not sure if I'll be able to man handle that thing on my own.
