I found "The One", 2001 Sport Ed. TRD SC'd

Congrats on the good deal. To the best of my knowledge you will be the first 2001 e-locker 4runner. This thing just keeps getting better and better.

That's a good score.

What are you going to do about the switch? Use the rr dif lock button or retrofit a locker switch from a landcruiser?

Nice to get a deal! Nice! Must feel good.

Interested in the other axle if you sell it...We are vultures.

My existing housing is pristine, not a speck of rust and black as it was from the factory. It would cost a crapload to ship to you though.

That's a serious deal. I'm looking forward to seeing your install.

Me too. If my plans work out, I'll have the 3rd member by early next week.

Thanks! I'd love it if I was the first, but I don't think I will be. I'm pretty sure Liny4Runner (????) did it a couple years back on his '01.

Either way, it will be one of a handful of them running around.

That's a good score.

I may use an aftermarket switch like the one in this write up > How To: DIY Retrofit Elocker Wiring - YotaTech Forums

BUT, chances are VERY good (:wink2:) that I'll end up w/an OEM switch in my possession. I haven't decided for sure which way I'll go, this housing just came onto my radar yesterday.

That's an awesome deal! Great find. I vote for finding an OEM switch. Your ride is so nice and clean looking, might as well keep it going.

This should be fun to see being built. Good luck BFAD. You may find a 4runner with 4:10 gearing (I did finally after many months). I pulled the diff just to count to make sure.

If you want a Tacoma RR switch, I have one lying around at my parents house in SC with the factory connector.

Great get. Now you just need an ARB in the front. LOL By the way what year was that out of?

It came out of a 1996. I took pictures of every last peice of it yesterday before I pulled it. Then I went home and compared the pics to the axle on my 2001... The ONLY difference between the '96 housing and the '01 housing is that on the '01 housing there is an extra bolt hole on the D/S upper link tower that is used to bolt on some addtional brake parts that are found on the later model trucks.

Nothing a drill and a nut/bolt wont fix.

I'm with you. I'd love to have that OEM switch in there. As long as I can figure out how to wire it, that's the way I'll go. I still have more research to do on the wiring.

I can't keep my mouth shut anymore... you guys are pulling it out of me. Truth is I've already got a complete drum to drum axle with a 4.10 3rd out of a Tacoma lined up. More details to come once I pick it up. The seller is going to include the RR Diff Lock switch for me.

Toyota E- locker switch and controller | eBay

Still lurking in your thread, getting more ideas. Its coming along nicely.

Thanks man. I'll check out that link, but as I mentioned above, I've already got a line on the switch part of things.

EDIT!!!! I just checked out your EBAY link, and I realized that I saw the E-Locker ECU in the part out truck today. I was digging around under the dash to see if I could find it and I found one that was labeled "Computer, 4 Wheel Drive Control". I didn't pull it because I wasn't sure it was the right one. But now that I know, I'll go back tomorrow and yank it.

AWESOME!!!

Tons of progress here man and it's super exciting. I wish I could have found an E-Locker axle housing in that good of shape. Wow.

I did the E-locker retrofit last year. If you have any questions about the wiring or anything let me know. I run the OEM switch, OEM controller, actually my setup is wired fully OEM even with the dash light. It's the only way to go IMO!

I have a bunch of really good documents saved on the wiring portion and I can email them to you if need be. Just shoot me a PM.

Cheers dude,
Addison

EDIT: here was one of the best links IMO for doing the swap: http://sonoransteel.com/phong/retrofit_electric_locker.html

That may be the only way to go, but it's a way I probably cannot go. You have to keep in mind I have an '01 and the locker was discontinued in '00. From what I've been reading they changed the wiring harness on the '01+ models and there is NO prewiring in the truck. My instrument cluster doesn't have the RR diff light... not that it's there but not lit up...it's not there period.

I'm going to have to do some custom wiring w/this one, or buy a kit from Inchworm or 12voltguy.

Thanks for the offer on the help though, I will definitely be in touch if I get in a bind.

When I had an elocker wired up in my old 96 4runner I used the factory wiring from the elocker to the body and then an inchworm control harness for it along with a factory switch. I didn't use the little black box or anything.

See above. There won't be even a smidge of wiring pre-existing in the truck that I can use. I'm going to have to wire it up from scratch. I'll be keeping you in mind for help as well. Thanks for the tips.

Well then, I am of little use to you.... Haha either way, if your usin the OEM switch its gunna look OEM. The word on the street is that the factory elocker switch can be set to illuminate when the Locker is engaged. I've been meanin to figure it out for mine but have yet to find the motivation to do it. I would not be disappointed if you did this and followed it up with a classic - Big Fish writeup!! Haha

Good goin man....looks like you're equipping your rig for some good wheeling battle ahead huh? CBI for armour, E-locker for some artillery:guitar2:

Sure got your hands full now with these nice additions for sure. Can't wait to see the bumper installed!

You know I'll post whatever I learn throughout the process. Thanks again for the help/support man.

I'm equipping it to handle anything I might run into in my travels. I do alot of backcountry travel by myself... mainly because we don't have alot of active 4x4 clubs around here, and most of the ones that do exist are for Jeeps... AND... they mostly do local trails.

I've been stuck in the boonies twice in the '97, facing a long walk out for help. Luckily those situations worked out, but I don't want to repeat them.

I'm just happy to be getting back into the '01 again. I had to keep it low budget for awhile there and focus on the '97, but now that its mostly done I can turn my attention back to the '01.

The 5 digit paycheck I got today sure helps w/getting these bigger mods done too! :D

1...2...3...4...5. Took me a minute to figure out exactly how much $ that was, minimum. :D

Being stuck is a terrible terrible feeling. Especially alone. And that was only one time and wasn't that far out at all.

Did you Tacoma axle come through? Think I saw it on TTORA.

Off topic (mood killer).... Where did you pick up the female quick disconnects for the in-cab winch controller? Specifically for the part that the winch controller plugs into. Those female quick disconnects. I have tried 4 different stores but they are all too big width wise and just fall off.

I can't remember where I bought them, it had to be AutoZone or O'Rielly's...

Regarding the Tacoma axle...

It just so happened that later on that very day that I had found the 4Runner housing, I was browsing Craigslist and came across this ad:

04 Tacoma TRD e-locker rear end 4.11 - $500 (nw)

Date: 2012-03-04, 1:21PM MST

I am selling the COMPLETE elocker rear end out my 2004 TRD Tacoma with 4.11 gears. Works flawlessly and is in great shape. I needed to extend my track width so I installed a tundra rear end. Asking 500 obo. Call or text 730-XXXX.

Did I ever mention that I LOVE CRAIGSLIST?

So I called the guy, and he told me that it had come out of his 04 Tacoma with 93K miles. He said the axle had no rust, was verified to be functional, was verified to have 4.10's, and had not been drained. His only reason for removing it was that he had upgraded to a long travel front end, which had increased his track width... Needing to increase the rear track to match, he removed his stock (elocked) rear end, and put a tundra axle under the truck. Because the tundra axle would not accept the e-locker 3rd, he had no use for it. He also said he'd throw in the "RR Diff Lock" switch, and do it all for $450...

Ok. :biggrin2:

So I went to check it out, and when I got there I was able to take a look at the truck it came out of... It wasn't too shabby.

I could tell from the trucks $4000 front suspension, and extensive mods, that the guy wasn't hurting for cash, and the fact that he had invited me to his home to pick up the axle made me feel confident that the wasn't trying to pass off some junk / rip me off.

The axle was as he said... rust free, and since it was on jackstands I had him hold one of the hubs still while I spun the other around twice and counted the rotations of the driveshaft flange... yup... 4.10's. I gave him his $450 and I was on my way.

Flange is in good shape... I also flipped the axle over and opened up the drain plug to take a look. I found no metal, no chunks, and no shavings on the plug.

All electronics are present...

The switch, as promised. I need to find a plug for it though, because it didn't seem like he was willing to cut the plug out of his truck's harness, and I didn't think it was right to ask him to do that.

These two are about to get Frankensteined!

As of now, I've got $510 into it. My plan is to part out & sell what's left of the Tacoma axle (any of you guys on Tacoma World are welcome to put the word out... I'll probably sign up over there and post it soon). I'll probably hang on to my existing diff & housing for awhile until I'm sure that there are no bugs with the new one. After that, I'll sell the old 4Runner housing and open diff as well. I'm hoping to get enough back on parting out the leftovers to break even on this mod. I guess we'll see.

NICE!!! If you need a hand with anything, let me know. Not the best wrencher, but I hold a flashlight a boss. Lol.

BTW I would throw it up on TTORA before I put it on tacoma world. Bigger market for that stuff over there.

With all this new stuff recently, its like you are preparing for an adventure or something.. Maybe Moab?.. :naughty:

4.10's huh? Hey I've still got my old 4.30's if you're interested in them. Might not be that much of an upgrade over 4.10's but just kinda throwing out the idea while the housings on the ground. Had about 135,000kms on them:shrug:

If you're willing to swap your gear sets...they're yours if ya want!
