BigFish...I must say, as many others have before me already...this build is so very inspiring. Since I started reading I have had so many ideas about what i need to do to my '00. At one point today i went out in the rain and pulled the cheesy chrome tube steps off my truck (they were on there when i bought it, but i never had the nerve to take them off lol). Thanks for all the inspiration again! someday I hope to have a rig as clean as yours.

Thanks for the compliments SHAUGHN_33! I'm building the 4Runner I've always wanted with this one, and it's always good to see that it's helping others feed their addictions!
Speaking of which....
I made some time to do a little work on the 4Runner today and knocked out two small things that I've had on my list for awhile.
I have to give credit for the first idea to SKIDMRK, since he's the first guy I've seen do it. The mod I'm talking about is wrapping the B-Pillars in Carbon Fiber embossed vinyl.
I didn't take many pictures of the application, because the job fully employed both of my hands and I didn't have a 3rd hand around to get photos.
The second thing I did was add one of the smoked plastic visors for the sunroof... I think it looks ok, and it'll let me use the sunroof if it's raining. I also have a set of in-channel window visors, but I'm not sold on them yet.
Here's an overall shot from this afternoon showing both of the new additions...

And lastly, I vote YES on proposition window visors.. at least through the coming rainy season. If it ever decides to show up, that is.

Later this week (July 7th) will be one year from the day I purchased my '01 4Runner and started on the build. I had two main goals in mind that I wanted to accomplish within a year of buying it; first I wanted to have the loan paid off completely, and second I wanted to have the build very close to complete.
Well, my last payment on the loan is next week, every mod is paid for and there are no credit card balances, and the truck is almost done, so I think I've met my goals.
The only thing left to do was take it out for it's first real test. Put my trust in my work and take this thing out on the open road. I don't know about other people, but for me, I have to build trust in my vehicles. The more times they take me out into the wild and back, the more faith I have in their reliability and capability, and the more I cherish them.
I have tested this 4Runner around town and at some urban off road areas, but it has never been driven more than 60 miles round trip since I purchased it.
This weekend, we loaded up the dogs, some gear, and hit the road to see how it would do in the real world. We drove 190 miles up to our family cabin in CO and put the '01 on some of the worst forest roads in the area. In total, we did about 80 miles on forest roads that included everything from bladed gravel, to narrow ATV paths through trees, lots of sharp rock, tree roots, mud, berms, and rutted areas. I got the inclinometers to hit over 30 degrees on both the front to back and side to side axis. Overall, it was a great test, and the truck performed flawlessly through 500 miles of anything I threw at it.
I got some new "pinstriping" on both sides of the 'Runner, and some on the roof. I got mud on it. I chipped up the sliders. I think I want onboard air, gears are beginning to sound like they might be in my future, and I'm pretty sure the dash mat has to go.
The most important thing though, is that I've got some faith in my rig.
Finally, some pictures of this animal where it belongs... in the wild! HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!

Nice work on the Carbon Fiber man! Great pics from your trip too! Glad to see that she performed well for you, and remember....if that pin stripping gets to you....you could probably buff it out with some Mother's Polish......that's what got my pinstriping out when I took mine through some trees last summer.....then again...you could leave them on....and consider them "Badges of Honour"! :trophy:

Thanks man. I think I'm going to just leave them. I know that if I take the time to buff them out I'll just end up with some fresh ones. I like the "Badges of Honour" idea. :uzi:
Me too! And now that it's done everything I hoped it would the first time out, I get to cook up some new challenges for it.
I was able to do both sides with a 12" x 20" section (leaving myself with plenty of excess for trimming), so I've got a 12" x 34" section left over... more than enough to do the whole thing over if it ever gets messed up, and if I stretched it, that might be enough to do it 2X.
It was time consuming to put on there, but I really like the end result. It's those subtle details that really do it for me. :biggrin2:

I'm glad somebody finally noticed it, because I was starting to wonder about the crowd around here. (j/k fellas!) It's a nice poster to look at while you're taking a break during a job though.

Mine came w/the vehicle when I purchased it, and they used some double sided tape to attach it to the dash... large squares of it. Well, it gets pretty hot here in the summer, so the adhesive on the tape melts and the mat starts to slide down the dash... so you have to unstick all the adhesive and re-align it every couple days. Also, if you're driving with both front windows down and you get a crosswind the front of the mat likes to lift up off the dash and flap around. Finally, it seems to collect a lot of dust when you're off road.
If I remove it, I'll probably be offering it up pretty cheap, if not free.

You just answered several questions I always had about them. How do you fasten it down? Why wouldn't it blow around (if left unfastened), with the windows down?
Hmm, I do like the sound of that price tho
You got me thinking now about what options you may have for fastening -vs- making removable, etc... (excluding lag bolting it directly to the dash)
If I think of anything i'll let you know.

Exhaust Sound Clip!!!! And TRD Center Caps...
If you look at nothing else in this thread, you need to at least check out this youtube video! I finally got around to shooting a quick video to show you guys what the exhaust sounds like. In the video I start the truck and let it idle, then take it up to 2500 rpm with a little blip on the way down... after that I take it up to 4000 rpm and hold for awhile, and finally I run it all the way up to redline and then back to idle. I love how this thing sounds and I think you will too.

4Ripcord also stopped by today to help me out in deciding whether or not to do the 231mm Tundra Brake Upgrade. He recently completed this mod and has detailed it in his thread (Link>> http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-g...runner-build-photo-timeline-7.html#post814391).
He was kind enough to let me try my wheels on his truck to see if my wheels would clear the 231mm calipers. After a careful test fit we confirmed that my Procomp 8069's do indeed clear the Tundra 231mm calipers. TUNDRA BRAKE UPGRADE...here I come! :thanks: Ripcord!
After he split, I decided to finish up a little side project I've been working on. When I put the wheels/tires on my truck I also picked up some Wheeler's Off Road black hubcaps... well, they looked nice at first but have since begun to fade and take on a dull, flat black appearance. I wanted to spruce them up a bit, so I had some "TRD" decals cut in red vinyl by a local sign shop.
First I cleaned up the hubcaps and applied the vinyl decals like so:
Then I masked off the bottom of the hubcaps up to the point where they begin to protrude from the wheel's center bore. I didn't want the paint making the hubcaps stick inside the wheels.
After that I hit them with a layer of Rustoleum Crystal Clear Enamel... it is labeled for outdoor use and is UV resistant and non-yellowing. Looking much better...
And here they are back in the wheel... they matched up perfectly with the finish on the Procomp 8069's....

I also got my hands on some Optix brand Acrylic Sheet from Lowes... it's basically plexi-glass, and an 18x24" sheet was only $10. The ARB bumper has an opening just above where the winch rope sits that allows alot of dust/water/rain/etc. to get all over the winch rope. I wanted to make something to block off that hole, but still allow me to see the winch rope to ensure that it's winding onto the spool evenly while winching. I cut a shaped section of the Acrylic Sheet and used some 3M double sided tape to secure it to the bumper.
Finally, I installed the AVS In Channel Vent Visors I got from Richbobthanks: again for the hookup on those man!) and took an overall shot of where it sits today.
