I got asked a funny question regarding what I drive

I went on a date with a girl last night whom I had gone on one prior date with. Toward the end of the night when we were wrapping up she asked me a curious question. She asked, "Why did you get a 4Runner and not a cool car?"

I sort of scoffed and then chuckled. I asked her to define what a "cool" car was. To which she replied "Something like a BMW."

Keep in mind, this chick is 24 and I'm 32. She may assume that because I have a place in a nice part of downtown la that I should be driving something more luxurious.

I had to explain, much to my disdain, that I'm secure enough with myself that I don't need to flex in a bmw crossover that are basically bloated sedans. That during warm months I go camping, to the dunes, mountain biking and take almost bi-weekly trips to the mountains for snowboarding in winter. Finally, that if I'm too worried about my luxury car to do any of those things then I don't want that car.

I really went on a tirade. Her response was, "Oh... that makes sense."

Anyone else get questioned on their purchase?

should have told her, "Let me show you" then proceeded to folding the rear seats flat, looking her in the face and say, "GET NEKID"

Maybe you should mod your truck more. I always get "that's a cool truck" comments from the guys and ladies!

Joking aside, I can kind of see where the ladies are coming from. Tell her that luxury cars are for little boys. Trucks are for the real men. If you want a man, this is what they drive!

+1 to all of the above but also I assume your truck is stock? (nothing wrong with this!) I got 1-2 people aday on our last trip commenting on the truck and 10x that many "lookers". My wife jokes that men now pay more attention to the truck then her in the passenger seat. The roof rack brought a noticable step up in comments and so far my favorite was someone saying it looked like it came out of Jurrasic Park........anyways doesn't sound like you are dating her for her automotive knowledge

Regional thing maybe? L.A. you need something luxury to look "cool?" In my area, people stop me and tell me how awesome my truck is regularly, including girls. My gf is 23 and loves my truck.

My wife was the reason I seriously considered one in the first place. I had been driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee and wanted to get into something new with a full warranty. She loved the way they looked, and after driving one and knowing about their reliability I was sold.

I tend to get comments such as: "Oh you got that because of the family, huh?" or "Got rid of your fun car for this, huh?"

:der:

In my area I get thumbs up a lot. Yesterday the FedEx guy pulled up along side and started talking truck and how awesome the truck was.

My problem is people think my rig is a FJ. Wait it has four real doors. Lol

I'm 25, and my business partner and his wife are a little older than I am. His wife asked what I was getting when she heard I was buying a new vehicle. He told her a new 4x4 4Runner and showed her a pic of the vehicle I had ordered. She audibly swooned and said that it's a "man's vehicle that definitely increases attractiveness." Keep in mind I heard all of this from my partner himself.

I nodded my head because there was nothing else I could say...but lots of good jokes have resulted from that convo!

However, I'm Texan through-and-through, so maybe the LA girls are just different and don't understand the power of a good truck?

It is all about perception and people having an "image" in their head. I can attest to this first hand as I just sold my "cool" 2012 BMW M3 last week and in turn have an order placed for a 4Runner. Between when I bought the M3 and now I have come to realize that having the "cool" car is pretty annoying when you enjoy outdoor activities, have dogs, ext. Just my 0.02

I say i couldn't care what other people think but i like the attention of driving something different and people always comment on my truck everywhere i go... All of my cars have been that way...

I have had cool cars bmw's, lexus, mercedes back when i had money and there fun but any time you go somewhere people think "oh look a cool car lets **** with it" my lexus sc400 some one tried to break in to numerious times to the point there was perminant gouge from there slimjim in the driver side window

And many trips to the dealership to buy new rod end clips to reattach the exterior door handle to the lock rod... Then the question of why the locking rod was under a metal cage and the door handle rod was not...

I suppose based on the age gap you're not terribly concerned, but I consider a girl asking "what car do you drive" or "why that car" to be a red flag. It could be nothing though.

Anyway, I did get a lot of looks from women when driving my M3's. Now with the TRD Pro, it's primarily dudes (though there's less of an imbalance when driving through small towns). The difference is pretty funny.
