Idk. I'm against 22re building. I watched a buddy take a 22rte and spend 2k in parts and machining, and while it had good power, it lasted months before blowing. He's back to a stock 22re in the truck now.

3.4's with a proper supercharger setup have serious power.

183 hp @ 4800 rpm
217 lbs.ft @ 3600 rpm

Stock 22re
105 hp @ 4800 rpm
137 lbs.ft @ 2800 rpm

The price of building a 22re just up to a Non-Boosted 3.4 makes it not so worth it because reliability just drops as stated above. BucknetBob also said that the power band increases at the top of the power band, which like he said, isn't good off road.

I understand that you're going for a unique ride, something that totally stands out. What's more unique then a fully built 1st gen on Dana's and 37" tires, a brand new interior, and a supercharged 3.4?

I somewhat understand your choice to attempt to move up to a 3rd gen, but it isn't the correct path.

What does a supercharged 3.4 cost? $1500 + right then ecm wire harness ect. and a supercharged 3.4 has 240hp ?
1uz at least 230-300 depends which one you get
really anything built "extreme" is cool and fun ,it's all about how big of a hole you want to dig in building it $$$$$$$$$$$
I dream of 1uz just because its sounds good ,smooth power ,it's factory toyota so you can abuse it and it last

Well, because his goal wouldn't be a specific HP or whatever, his goal is to see what he can do with a built 22re. Lots of guys motor swap to get the power they want, it's been done. But I think a blown 22RE would be sick. I think a paired supercharger or a twinturbo setup to get more juice down low would be even sicker.

It's not always about practicality. I fully support The Dude in his quest for 22RE superiority. :cheers:

I met someone yesterday that does a lot of toyota swaps and stuff he did a 2uz swap and 3 20r/22re hybrids and he was saying he won't do a built 22re anymore just because the power you get and trouble you go through it's not worth it . he said the 2uz gets better fuel economy . his 22re Hybrids where 20r head dual valve springs bigger valves 22r block ,early 83 celica injection ,and larger injectors, and big cam . sounds cool for a 22re though . I recently had a 22r built for my 83 pickup and the engine builder said he does toyota motors all the time and he can build it to be whatever you want ,but if you go extreme don't expect to get more than 30k miles out of it . Don't know if that's always the case but :dammit: Whatever you do i wish you the best and enjoy it

I bet his 2uz does get better fuel economy. Newer stuff does that. I've seen 1gr's, 5vz's, 3rz's, 1uz's, etc get better mileage than my 22re. That's the price to pay for driving older stuff.

If you build an r-series, it should be because you love it, not because it's economical. And i've seen plenty of people that swear by their 22re's. C:

I have tossed around the idea today of drastically changing plans. I really like the idea of a soft top, cool ride with no doors, newer more comfy vehicle... There's only one current platform that fits the bill for all of those. Jeep. There, I said it! I have had mixed thoughts about them for a while and I really don't have anything against them. But the idea is to get a newer 4 door jeep but because they're so expensive, I'll wait a while and pay cash for one. I guess that means that I'll keep my 4runner for another 8 months or so. That's the current idea but I go back and forth every 5 minutes.

It's not that I am getting tired of wrenching on it. I think it really just boils down to the fact that I'm getting bored with it and I want something newer and more plush with the same open style.

As far as reliability, a buddy of mine had a jeep wrangler that he abused for a long time and finally sold it at 250xxx miles or something in that area. He never mentioned anything about problems with it. He eventually sold it and got a Nissan Xterra. But I think that reliability goes as far as the maintenance that the owner puts into it.

Honestly man I kinda got tired of my runner. But the more I try to sell it, the more I cant. Love the runner too much, i still have fun with her & shes at 350k almost, not willing to give out.

I owned a TJ for many years, took meticulous care of it, rarely took it off road and the transmission takes a **** around 60k miles. Get it fixed and it throws a rod at 80k. Never again.

My Dad and I went wheeling with a Jeep not too long ago.
My dad summed it up nicely by saying that he would rather have the Jeep with a solid front axle, and 4:1 Transfer Case on a trail. But he wouldn't want one any other time. I drove 3 hours in my 3rd gen in complete comfort averaging 20 mpg. Then hit the trails and did everything that jeep with dual lockers did. I then drove it home 3 hours directly after the trails. It's the fact that my 3rd gen does everything well, why trade it for something that's great at one thing?

4 doors on a wrangler are just wrong to me still. but it would give you that open space you're going for.

newer vehicle is nice and I'm sure you would enjoy it... just dont forget, jeeps have come a long way but they're still built by Chrysler and they can't seem to keep their **** together even now. expect the big things to go wrong, or nothing at all. such weird vehicles.

Everyone has their opinions and personal experience with certain vehicles. I'm not really worried about the capability. I have learned that ANY vehicle can be just as capable as the next with the right parts.

I don't care about Chrystler's problems, I don't plan on buying a new jeep that has a warranty. I'm looking at the practicality of a Jeep based on what I'm looking for in a vehicle. This isn't the first time I've come across this path but I think that I'm more concrete on it now. In order for me to make my 4runner into what I want, I'll spend easily 15k on it and I'll still only have a vehicle that is worth 7-8k MAX. I can find a used jeep that is already built up for 15k and still have a vehicle that is worth 15k. I know that there is no such thing as an investment in an offroad vehicle, but bang for the buck... I think the Jeep is winning over the 4 Runner.
