I have taken the plunge!

Well, I put my 4runner up on craigslist. I am not 100% sure I want to sell it but this is more of a let's see what I can get for it. I think that if someone gave me my full asking price, I would let it go and then buy a 3rd gen. I think that at max, it would cost about $300 to fix my engine so I don't see that as a huge set back.

If it doesn't sell, it doesn't break my heart either.

Now, Kid.. I know you're going to kick nuns and punch puppies over this. But I'm not leaving the T4R family.

For those who are curious... here it is:

ive been thinking about doing the same thing to mine. i love my 1st gen and the 22re that hasn't let me down but i need more power and 4 doors wouldn't hurt much. i think 3rd gen is the way to go. good luck to you.

4th Gen is the way to go....
said no one ever. (I kid, damn v8's)

sv good luck man, dont think you'll have a problem with selling it.

man all this third Gen talk...

I don't think I'll have too hard of a time selling it either. But there are a LOT of 1st gens here in the area on craigslist and I'm asking more than any of them. However, maybe I'm just biased but I think mine is one of the nicest.

I wouldn't bash 4th gens too much. I had one that I traded in for my 2010 Tundra and I loved that 4runner. I just couldn't bring myself to do any real wheeling with it because if I damaged it I would have been upset at myself. Now a 3rd gen on the other hand has enough power for me and is comfortable enough for a DD and capable enough for a wheeler. I'll still build it up and throw 35's on it, probably a SAS eventually. But... I would rather have a more cozy DD that I can still have as a weekend wheeler and toy.

my only problem is that 4th gens stock remind me too much of the rav4. now if they were a manual v8 that would make things different.

no third gens in my area that were a manual v6. not that I saw anyway. is yours going to be an auto?

I would prefer a manual but if I find a good deal on a clean auto, I probably wouldn't turn it down. My main thing is a clean interior and a solid drive line.

I'm sure that now I post it for sale, my motor will blow up or something crazy is going to happen. Helo's rig took a dump on him as soon as he put it up for sale.

just dont let her know about it. lol.

what exactly is wrong with it... burning or leaking oil? I see it was just rebuilt. if its burning oil, I wonder if the rings weren't properly indexed.

It's burning the oil. From what I can tell, the crank care pressure is too high. Basically what's happening is the combustion is getting past the piston rings and raising the crank case pressure. The oil has no where to go but through the pcv breather line on the front of the valve cover. From there the oil goes into the intake and into the combustion chamber.

What do you mean about indexing the piston rings? I built the motor based off of the FSM during assembly. I don't recall it saying about indexing the rings. I did install them per the FSM and check their gaps. My assumption was that the machinist didn't bore the cylinders correctly but I don't know for sure. I don't even know for 100% that any of the above is my issue. But I do know that I am burning the oil and not leaking it. I wish it was a simple oil leak.

I'm sure you did the rings right. what I meant about it was where you position the ring gaps.

did the machinist bore or just hone the cylinders? you say bore but I'm just checking. if you used chrome rings on a honed cylinder it won't seal correctly. only on a bored cylinder will they work.

how was the break in process?

It was bored .03 and I don't remember what type of rings they were. It was a rebuild kit from engnbldr.com I think they are rock rings but I don't know what they're made of.

During break in I let the motor idle for about 15-20 minutes and got the timing set and adjusted the valves. On my first drive I drove the heck out of it and put the motor through the ringers to set the piston rings. After that I drove it normal.

I don't have anything against the 3.0. I have seen FoG's 3.0 perform very well. I would trust it just as much as a 3.0.

OK well it sounds like the kit was correct... bored will take cast or chrome rings without trouble. your break in is like it should be... driven hard to promote better ring sealing.

so yeah.. maybe the bore out of round is wrong somewhere or the valve guide to valve clearance is too much. (.001"-.003" general spec)

that's too bad. if you end up keeping it, a catch can may be useful so its not smoking (assuming it does).

Honestly, i'm thinking of doing the same thing this spring. I've always liked third gens, and they've got considerably more power and practicality. I might find myself in one by this time next year. Or a tacoma.

It's hard to love the no power/ no mileage combination of the 22re. Granted, i am somewhat undergeared.

anyway, best of luck on the plunge. I'm sure you'll enjoy a third gen.

I really don't have too many arguments about the power. My engine is built up a bit so even at 6000 feet, I still have plenty of power to cruse at 80mph on the freeway. My mileage isn't that bad either and I think a part of that is that I have regeared to 4.88 diffs.

I mainly want a 3rd gen for the comfort of it. The extra power will be nice but I just want to be able to drive 4-5 hours and still be cozy.
