I got t-boned In my 4-runner a few weeks ago!! I saved up for 6 months and looked for this baby for about a year. It was a mix of 10 foot snow banks and them driving a lowered 99 white buick way to fast for winter conditions. anyways i just wanted to make a thread for all those who remove your running boards. be careful my legs should probably be broken right now. you can clearly see the impact the running boards took in the pictures. i was hit straight on the drivers door at about 70-km per hour. no damage on the back door and very minimal on the front quarter panel. JUST MY DOOR!! smashed in and raised up the drivers seat about 5 inches. pinched inner and outer rocker to nothing(need to replace both). smashed rear left tail light. bent inner and outer tie-rod to ****. the other car is a write off. the whole front was gone. the person is fine(thank god for that). Im very impressed with how tough this 4-runner is. i took it to the body-shop and the buick didn't even bend the frame it just turned my running board into spaghetti. my engine mount snapped so the engine was off 3 inches so my air-box wouldn't fit anymore. already fixed that. if I'm gonna go mudding ill just take the 10 mins it takes to remove the running boards. I'm going to post pics for all those who maybe need the info. were in the process of cutting out the drivers side floor and replacing it. after that the new door from the scrappers and the rockers and shes fixed. hope this thread helps. if anyone has any questions about the repair build feel free to ask and ill answer the best i can. The boards only helped bend the floor more. I will take my chances.

Damn that sucks, but I think the running boards probably increased the damage. Helped bend the frame.

That tie rod is wild man! I'd take a really close look at your rack after that. Glad you're ok, its kinda hard to believe with the amount of damage is there.
