I need to be schooled on tires.

Hey

Couple questions. First off when I first bought my 4girl she had 4 different types of tires on her one has a leak that I am needing to replace now keep in mind the other 3 are still in good condition. Should I replace them just because they are all different brands of tires? If so why?

Also if I do what kind of tire should I get? I was looking at the bf goodrich t/o k/o or the silent armour. I would like something good for getting up to the mtn for backpacking or snowboarding and doesn't break my bank by mpg or cost wise.

So I was thinking I would need a a/t tire maybe some said they were decent in the snow too.

Any suggestions and advice would be awesome! I apologize for my horrible setence structure I'm typing from my phone

Personally I'd replace all 4. I like BFGoodrich. Their All-Terrains are pretty good but I really like the KM2's, they're my favorite tire.
 
I've seen people who tun two brands of tires, paired on front and back. That doesn't seem to be a huge problem. however, 4 different tires may not be good just because the tread at each corner is different. Can't give you a 100% answer on that though.

I'll suggest these tire, Falken Rocky Mountains. Cheaper than the other options, have a 50K warranty, and have gotten me through everyday driving conditions and a few off road trips.

Opinions on AT tires are about as plentiful as anything else around here. I'd say most ATs are comparable to each other, similar in price and performance. You'll get 10 different recommendations.
 
You should take a look at Goodyear duratracs. A lot of guys run them and I think they are the best all around tire. Sure you can find tires that are better in the snow, or better on the street, or whatever, but these perform well in all catagories. They have much better road manners than you would think. They are a bit on the expensive side however.

I've got max 4k left on mine and duratracs are what I'm going with...
 
Well both falkens and duratracs are coming up as the same price for me, and both look awesome soooo expensive though 175 a tire ha ha ...
 
Where are they the same price? If thats true, I'd go with the Duras...although I've never seen that happen! Also, what size are you looking at?
Looking at a 265/75/16, Falkens are $164 and Duras are $213...

i would change all of them at the same time to the same tire, and here is why-

first off having 4 different tires means 4 different types of handling and handling characteristics... not really a good thing. secondly with 4 different tires they will have different wear patters and rates, as well as not all being new around at the same time, so they are not only wearing at different rates, but they are at different stages of wear. -not only that but each tire manufacture specs their tires different, even in sizing.. so while they might all be 265 70 16s, they are not all the same size... even with the same manufacture, say like GoodYear, their AT tires might be a slightly different size than their MTs even though they both say they are the same spec... now whyle that is not really a issue that is gonna cause problems with your vehicle as far as the drive train, it could cause some issues with the traction control system/ABS/ESC ect. sometimes those systems do not like variances... probably not a big issue on our trucks as they are not high performance sports cars that have computers that calculate inputs from sensor thousands of times a second but still.... replace all 4 at the same time with the same tire. if nothing else just do it for peace of mind knowing you have 4 new tires that are all good, and it gives you a starting point for maintenance.
 
I just had new tires installed this weekend as part of my annual state inspection. As much as I'm glad to have brand new tires just before the snow flies, I hate having to buy new tires less than a month before Christmas.

I went with Cooper Discoverer AT3's and I LOVE them. I went with the stock size of 265/70/16 and I had them mounted and balanced for $169.00 per tire. They look very aggressive and ride real nice. TONS of tread.

My wife and I own a vacation home in the Pocono Mountains and we go up 4-5 times over the course of the winter to take the kids skiing and tubing and I MUST have good snow traction as we can get some heavy snow up there. Last year with mediocre Michelin tires, my 4 runner was awesome in the snow and I can't wait to see how it performs with brand new tires.
 
Gotcha...you're looking at a 245. Is there a specific reason you're going that small? Most of us came with 265/70/16 as stock, although some had smaller. You can actually fit a 265/75/16 on a stock truck, and at that size there are tons of options.
Hankook Dynapro, Cooper AT3 and ATP, General Grabber, BFG AT, the Treadwrights, the list goes on. Most of these are very similar in performance, and you'll most likely be happy with any of them.
 
little side bar--when shopping for winter tires on tirerack they give you the standard 265 70 16 with the option of 245 75 16--for the narrower width.
 
but factory in the shipping though.. cause when i got mine.. it was about $170 from tire rack but americas tire priced match with about $10 dollars more per tire..

i got mine for $180 + the mail it rebate..

otd, I was about $790 with tax + rotate/balance fee with the rebates.. but before the rebates.. I was at around $970 before the rebates..

i did check with Costco.. but they didn't have the duratrac.. they had the bfg.. and for the same size 265/75/16 in load range E's.. it was like $1400..

i had the bfg at.. they were an great tyre, I got about 70k out mine before replacing it last year with the duratrac.
 
A friend of mine owns a local service station. He's the only one I trust doing a wheel alignment. So I always go to him for tires.

They have been coopers only for around 20 years now. He just put AT3's on the 4runner for 860 including tax and mounting. He charged 36 for mount and balance.

Ya shipping is a killer on some of these deals. The only place I know that does free shipping and no taxes is Discounttiredirect.com. Call them up and talk to them, they'll cut you a deal if you're ready to buy.
