imp:I've driven my Mother's CRV quite a bit and honestly it's a pretty capable suv. We get some pretty bad winters here and it handled them without a hiccup. It's not a massive 4x4 but it's comfortable, reliable and has strong resale value.
That's not to say the 4R isn't. It felt like such a massive vehicle when I first bought it and wondered if I could ever get used to it. This is coming from a little Infiniti G35! I haul a lot of crap for work and it's amazing what I can still have room for. It is the vehicle we take when I take the boys backpacking/camping or even just hauling a group of 5 comfortably. There will likely be no excuse for me to upgrade to another vehicle because there simply isn't anything this thing can't do that I would NEED (not want).
That said, I think you're doing the right thing by letting her and her alone choose everything she wants. The way I see it, you're going to have to choose between the M3 or a decked-out 4x4 monster right now. Enjoy what you have now and don't worry too much about material wants in the future.

I'm still not sure why there are so many people that want to talk $h!t on the CRV - especially people that have never owned/driven one. As I already stated, I owned one for 5-6 years and it was a great car. It is obviously not a 4Runner, but it is still a high quality build and very capable car for what it sounds like the OP is going to use it for. I have since upgraded to the T4R, but my needs have changed. Comparing the two is apples and oranges. They are obviously very different vehicles for all the the reasons we already know, so I won't bother listing them.
I think you'll be very happy with the CRV, but I will say that you should at least look at the Rav4 if you are going to the Toyota dealership to look at the 4Runner anyway. It is very similar to a CRV (size wise) but has a locking dif and V6 option which is like the best of both worlds. The Sport Edition would probably be best in my opinion. It is still much smaller than the T4R, but I still think it is a better looking vehicle than the new CRVs. That said, my mom just drove her new CRV home tonight!
Anyway, don't let the people on here that choose to judge the quality of the vehicle based on the stereotypical driver sway your opinion. I honestly think you'll be happy no matter what you choose. As for me, I was happiest with a 4th Gen T4R and wouldn't ever look back, but your needs are different than mine.

To update everyone on this thread I bought the 2012 Honda CRV EX for my wife last Saturday. Its a pretty nice car for the money. I like the little colored lcd screen which has a back up cam with 3 view angels and a bunch of settings you can customize. Just paid $23,XXX before tax and wife loves it. Only have 110 miles on it and averaged 33mpg on it, not bad for a small ute. Overall we are happy with the purchase. Now in a year or two I will be in the market for a 4runner. :biggrin2:

4runner is not all that great on gas either. No one buys a M3 due to the gas mileage it gets. I just drive it on the weekends anyway. Most likely I will sell the M3 in 4-5 years. M3 is a great car that I always wanted so If I sell it prematurely I will regret it.
I am planning to get a used 4runner in 2 years or maybe buy a new T4R TE when the model refresh happens.
All my previous car purchases I made the decision on the cars to get which she had no problem letting me do that. But finally she wanted a new car for herself. She never had a new car before. So I let her make the decision on her own to pick the car she wanted, color, model, etc. Now she is happy and the CRV is a great car to have, simple, economical, and reliable.
Last night I ordered the oem all weather floor mats and cargo tray for the back.
