Just thought I'd throw in there that there is plenty to mod on a CRV as well. there are quite a few 2002+ very nicely .... non-soccer mom... CRV's documented on hondasuv.com; mine included. I had so much fun with that car. Some of it listed below:

Test drove the CRV twice and now we need to test drive a 4runner. I decided IF I do get a 4runner it will be a used 2008 or 2009 4x4. I just do not want another car payment so the next car I want to buy in full. M3 payment is already enough. Prior to the M3 I have not had a car payment for 6 years. Takes some getting used too.
IF she likes the 4runner I would want a 2009 TE but those are hard to come by.
If not then I will get her a CRV and I will get myself a 4runner when my finances allow.

I thought it that idea. But that means I would have 2 V8's in the household, not the most economical fleet to have. I want a locking rear differential. Locking rear diff got me out of some sticky situations in my Tacoma and I hate to give that up so that is why I want it in the 4runner.

I can't help but comment on your post. I was in the exact same boat about 6 months ago. 2001 Corolla, 1st baby on the way, mama had a honda insight, and we needed something bigger. We looked at Volvos, Chevys, Fords, Jeeps, Hondas and about every other damn thing imaginable before our kid was born.
We ended up getting a 2011 4R Trail Edition and couldn't be happier. The Toyota was in some cases a few thousand less and a few thousand more than say a Honda CRV. Mama ended up liking the 4runner out of all of them, and I sold it to her this way......
We have a yellow labrador and need a little bigger car than a small compact SUV. Once the baby get's a little older, we're going to have to haul the toys around, diaper bags, strollers, their friends etc... If we tow something with us to go camping, we need a vehicle with a frame and not a unibody constructed vehicle. The 4runner sits up a little higher than a smaller SUV which will protect you and the baby if someone crashes into you. Have her drive a Chevy Tahoe and get a feel for how big that is, then take a trip over to Toyota and have her drive a 4runner. She will more than likely feel more comfortable now in a smaller SUV.
To be honest with you, I couldn't wait to get our 4R TE off road. We took it hill climbing and 4wheeling the 5th day we had it! It did an amazing job off road, even with the stock street tires. Better than any Tacoma or Tundra I've ever owned.
If your looking to buy local in Southern CA, I would highly recommend Escondido Toyota. We bought ours from another dealership on a trip to only "look" at them again, and ended up buying it. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND STAYING AWAY FROM TOYOTA OF POWAY, where we bought ours. They were all about the sale and nothing else, a true pain in the a$$ to deal with! If you go to Escondido Toyota, ask for Paris. He took care of us multiple times when we were shopping. He got us a price of $36.5K for a brand new 4Runner TE. The only problem was we didn't want a black vehicle.
Good luck with it, I don't think you will be disappointed with a 4R TE.

We looked at the CRV 3 times at the dealer already. My wife picked out the exterior/interior color she wants. Oddly she does not want leather. She is a very simple women I guess and she prefers the cloth over leather she said. I will probably get seat covers after my son gets older and starts kicking the back seats.
We have not bought it yet since we have been little busy. We are doing our backyard now and our driveway is full of construction materials.
I Most likely get my wife my a new CRV next month. Going to sell the Tacoma also (in order to get the crv). I will be in the market for a used 4runner in about 1-2 years hopefully.
The RAV4 is due for a redesign next year. Wish I can see it and get the specs of it before I purchase the CRV. Oh, well..
Will post up pics of the new car after we get it.
