I went to see the '96 4Runner that i found in hopes of purchasing it but one thing especially struck me as odd, although i'm guessing that being new to 4Runners im just missing something. The 4Runner badges said SR5 Limited, see the pic. The sides say limited as does CarFax... but why does it have an SR5 emblem? Someone just stuck it on for fun or...? Thanks, i promise to stop asking dumb questions one of these days.
I saw an SR5 Limited... i thought it was one or the other... how?

i have a 96 limited and the limited is suppose to be where the sr5 is. somebody messed up somewhere..i'm not sayin it's not a limited. also the limited emblem looks crooked or is it just me? do you have any other info on this truck? i would think the vin could tell you if it's a limited or not..i'm sure others will chime in..good luck
I assume this is the same vehicle you mentioned in the other thread. My adivce would be to be very careful with this vehicle. It already seems like it needs work, plus some fishy badging. Make sure they look it over real well and get the dealer to give you a carfax report if you havent already got one. Still, the dealer should be able to tell you if it was wrecked or not. But be careful with it . Usually when something from a car dealer is too good to be true then it usually is.
I did do a CarFax... it came up clean, one owner etc just like the dealer claimed. The CarFax also stated that it was a limited.

NoDak: this is a 3rd gen... and if the c-pillar is the body between the two back windows (please excuse my ignorance) then there are limited badges there.
thholr: yes, this is the same vehicle from the other thread, and it does need a little cosmetic work, we'll see if it needs mechanical work after i take it in to the local toyota service department.
I'll just remain skeptical until i get the mechanics opinion... It's still weird how the SR5 badge got on it.

the C pillar is the wide body strip between the rear doors and the back cargo area window. if there is a limited emblem there on both sides then im pretty sure its a limited. only reason i mention it was that the rear liftgate limited emblem is not horizontal like the the toyota emblem. they should be on the same horizontal plane. if they are not, that usually leads me to believe that the rear end had some body work done to it. i have never seen factory applied emblems not be on the same horizontal plane irregardless of vertical plane. only time you get emblems on different horizontal planes is when the emblems had to be replaced due to rear end damage or very rarely, someone ripped them off, since i hardly ever see a body shop use a straight edge to mount new emblems correctly.
another thought is if the emblem is loose, i may be due to rough driving or handling by previous owner which would alert you to check the under carriage for any damage due to lack of off-roading skills or just plain trashing the vehicle.
just some things i look for when buying a used toyota since toyota has a pretty tight tolerance for body panels and such when undamaged, and out of tolerance body panels and such lead you to believe something is amiss.
just my opinion and heads up.

ps: another place to look for rear end damage is the gap between the lower rear light turn signal housing and the top of the chrome bumper. alot of times if there is damage to the bumper the body shop neglects to properly fix the sheet metal in this area since its hardly noticed. only reason i bring this up is when my 98 4runner was hit from behind, the body shop did a lousy job (the toyota dealership i actually bought my 98 from) of painting the gap before putting on the chrome bumper.

No Such Thing As an SR5 Limited!!!
This bastard stole someone's Limited badge. Some scumbag stole all the the badges off my old 99 Limited and scratched the hell out of my paint. Luckily, the dealer either didn't notice or care when I traded it in for my 03.

I swear somebody on this forum from Canada had an SR5 Limited or Limited SR5. The badges were positioned a bit differently though. I'm pretty sure it was legit, it was a Canadian version.
I looked and looked but can no longer find it or any info on it. :dunno:
It was a black 3rd Gen with brushgaurds on the front and tailights and was traded off for a new one. Anybody else remember who that was?

When you open the tailgate, look for a little sticker tag that has the VIN on it. If it's missing or doesn't match with the real VIN, chances are that the tailgate has been replaced (which would mean that it was in a rear collision). You can check for VIN tags on every body panel on the truck, too.
On that rear bumper, the passenger-side usually has a smaller gap than the driver's side... it's just the way they all are. My '00 was like that and every 4Runner I've looked at recently that I know was not in a rear-end collision has been like that, too. Just the way they come from the factory.

I own(ed) a 2000 4Runner that had both the SR5 and Limited badges. My sister purchased the vehicle directly from a dealer new, and I obtained it from her. I can safely say neither of us stole a limited badge for the vehicle. My car was just stolen, and I am in conflict with the insurance company, who only wants to pay for the basic SR5 value. I have been told that certain vehicles originating outside of the US have these.
