I think I'm coming back to the 4R world

Howdy from Durango.

Are you looking at Durango Motor Company? They have a few 4runners on the lot, and they seem to be consistently pricing at ~$500 over invoice. But you may be able to do better on one of their 2016s.

They also have a pretty active aftermarket accessories business. I called Toytec to get an idea who they recommend for installations in our area, and they said Durango Motor Co. I was pretty surprised that their recommendation was a local Toyota dealer...

So i've got a 2017 Off Road Premium (with KDSS) on the way and the dealer is doing a few mods, including a ToyTec BOSS lift, before i take delivery.

Make sure to hang your speedo's off of the brush guard to get them nice and dry! :hungry:

As soon as I get my new T4R I'm getting a custom made brush guard with 5" tubing for the front and back, powder coated bright pink, with airbrushed pictures of mermaids with big boobs. You'll all be green with envy!

I'm trying to avoid Durango Toyota if possible after a bad experience buying my Tundra from them. They told me that the Tacoma I was trading in was "too new" and therefore nobody would buy it instead of a new one. They gave me a trade value way below book, which I stupidly took after they wouldn't budge any.

I've been at Webb Toyota in Farmington twice now and they're not trying hard at all to sell me a vehicle. They have this stupid "true market" price or some such nonsense, which works out to around $2200 over invoice. They claimed there was no negotiation on the price unless I could bring them a printout from another dealer with a lower price. Looking at Denver and Albuquerque now...uggh!

Was your bad experience with Durango under the current ownership or the prior owners? I heard horror stories about the place under the last owners.

Good luck in the search!

It was under the current owners. I special ordered my Tacoma there and that went great. It only turned bad when I tried to trade it in and they refused to give me what it was worth. I should have walked out, but I hated the Taco and wanted out of it bad enough that I just took their offer. My fault as much as theirs, but they still ripped me off on the trade. I just found a bunch of 4Rs in Grand Junction, so hopefully they want to sell me one.

If you haven't already, check out Mountain States up on the front range. They seem to have a lot of inventory and I've heard good things.

I bought my 4th gen from Groove in Denver, and I'd avoid them like the plague.

I had a similar experience with Webb Toyota in Farmington when buying my ex-wife's 2006 Rav4 Sport. I ended up getting them a price from a dealer in South New Mexico, and they said "if the price is so good, then drive down there and buy that one. That is not a comparable market." Um... there is nothing comparable to the Farmington, NM market. I know. I lived there way too long.

...okay. I started out the door since the drive to Las Cruces wasn't going to bother me a bit. By the time I got into my 2005 Jeep Liberty, the sales manager was running out the door to stop me. He was friends with my ex-wife's father who bought several trucks from Webb Chevrolet for several years. We ended up walking out with the 2006 Rav4 Sport 4WD with the 2GR-FE V6. She took it in the divorce, and that is the only thing I miss from my previous marriage.

I can't believe that Webb has ever sold a single vehicle. They are by far the most lazy, apathetic dealership I've ever worked with. They truly don't seem to give the slightest morsel of a crap if I buy from them or not. They don't even bother to return calls either. Then they have the nerve to tell me I have to pay whatever they say the price is with no negotiation possible. I'm done with them permanently! Going to Grand Junction on Tuesday with my Jeep and hoping for the best. It looks like they have a few spec'd out the way I want (TRD Off Road Premium with moonroof and KDSS). I just hope they can give me the $25K I need for the Jeep.

...look at where they are and who they sell to. Most people in the Farmington area won't drive out of the San Juan valley. I met people there that hadn't even driven to Shiprock - let alone Durango or Cortez. These people would rather do anything then drive to Albuquerque or Denver.

Now look at the used car market in Farmington. I worked with people (white and Navajo) that had never changed the oil in their vehicle. I tried to find a used Subaru or 4Runner while I lived there, and I was shocked at condition of all the used cars I looked at. I ended up driving up to Durango just to pay way too much for what I needed.

Webb Chevrolet/Toyota knows all of this, and they act "accordingly".

TrueCar buying service

I used that service when buying my 2106 Trail/KDSS. Tucson. Ended up going to Sierra Vista about 1.5 hours away as the local Toyota dealers wanted to play games but not Sierra Toyota, where I had to drive. The final price was agreed upon BEFORE I hopped in the car. You have less leverage if you are already at the car dealer. Very happy.

If you're willing to drive, both Stevenson and Mountain States Toyota have made me fantastic deals in the past. Both are medium / high volume dealers and don't appear to have much time to screw around.

Both are listing '16 4Runner Trail / Trail Premiums in stock at about $2,000 off MSRP, which is about as good as you're going to get in CO.

I agree with this. Mountain States had 3 identical Off Road Premiums, that were exactly what i was looking for. But they wouldn't do a trade with my local dealer for whatever reason. We ended up finding a vehicle in NM instead..will be here Monday or Tuesday.

Update! I decided to give Durango Toyota one more chance, since they had a ton of 4Runners in stock. I couldn't tell much about how each one was optioned from their website, so I went in to have a look. I told them I wanted a Trail Premium with KDSS and moonroof. They had three in stock and I could pick any color I wanted as long as it was black.

I asked if they could find another color and they found a red one in Las Cruces. When they crunched the numbers, bringing in the one from Las Cruces would have been $2000 more for an identical truck in a different color. They offered me nearly $4000 off MSRP on one of the black ones, which suddenly became a whole lot more attractive at that price. They also had only the options I wanted and no expensive "fluff" options.

I picked the one with all weather floor/cargo mats and hoped they wouldn't screw me on my trade. They ended up giving me $25,500 for my Wrangler, which was $500 more than I would have taken. They also agreed to swap my new LT255/75/17 Firestone Destination ATs onto the 4Runner and put the crappy Grandtreks on the Jeep.

So I got a great deal on the 4Runner and my trade in the end. The black is going to take a lot of work to keep up, but at least I can squeeze it into my tiny garage to keep it somewhat clean. No mods planned yet, but we'll see...

Congrats man. Do yourself a favor and order some Optimum No Rinse Wash and Wax, a spray bottle, and some microfiber towels. Enjoy!

Congrats! You wont regret your choice. I love my '16 TEP with KDSS. I put the TRDPro suspension on it and it rides like a dream! :peep:
