ICON Shock Service: TPM Racing

I reached out to Steve with TPM initially on 3/29 about servicing my 2.5 Coilovers and 2.0 Smoothbody rear shocks. In my inquiry I requested new 700lb rate coils be installed as well as a new collar on one of the coilovers as one had been warped from adjustment. We talked about rates for service per model of shock, turn around time (2 days), and what parts would need to be ordered vs what he currently had in stock.

A little over a week later on 4/6, I contacted him to let him know they were on the way and supplied him with a tracking number for our records. They arrived at his shop on 4/11. Very little communication transpired over the time they were at his shop. 9 days later they shipped from his shop via the same service (UPS Ground) that I had them shipped originally. I paid freight both ways (was to be expected) and received them on 4/24.

Upon opening the packages I discovered that one of the collars had not been replaced rendering preload adjustment on the strut very difficult if not impossible with the new coils. I plainly requested, in writing, that it needed to be replaced. He very specifically told me that he had only one extra collar in stock and that he would allocate to the job. So it wasn't perfect, whatever. Am I going to ship it back (4days) for it to sit in his shop (4days) for another to be installed and then shipped back (4 days)?

I installed them all that afternoon with the exception of one coilover because one of the bushings sent back for the lower bearing was for another vehicle (diameter was too small). Now I admit that I sent them in with the coilovers because they were stuck and I did not want my handiwork attempting to remove them. However, I would expect that the organization on his end be a little better and to be a bit more thorough when preparing these to be shipped.

I did contact him early Tuesday afternoon (~1pm EST) and informed him that I had received the wrong bushing. He replied an hour or so later saying he was sorry and would have a set drop shipped from ICON that day. Well its friday, still nothing in the mail (all services have already run) and the communication with Steve is relatively inconsistent compared to the initial inquiry conversations.

*At the time of writing this he is just now looking for a tracking number from ICON about the replaced bushings.*

A 2nd vehicle was used throughout this entire process to make life much easier and the attempt was made to always keep the channels of communication open.

Now I may not have a fancy setup like many pre runners out west and spend thousands upon thousands for suspension services all the time, but for a service that cost me just over $800 without the shipping there or back, I expected a bit more professionalism when dealing with a business that is promoted by the manufacturer themselves.

My final thoughts are this: If you have a reputable business that will perform the service, you are better off there.

Please let me know what you all think. Am I b****ing too much? Post what experiences you've had and where. ICON only lists 4 or 5 places as "certified" to do the service.

& here is what the truck has looked like for the past 3 weeks.

my kings are being rebuilt right now and having stiffer springs put on as well. mind you, i only had the front done, but i was quoted $520 and that included springs, new seal kits, uninstalling them from my runner, and reinstalling them on it, plus installing new UCAS.

This shop seems like a rip

Icon use to charge $125/ea for the 2.5 shocks and $65/ea for the 2.0 when they were rebuilding them. It appears they slipped in a bit extra almost everywhere on you, unfortunately. Cost of doing business though and perhaps they all do this. I don't know. Did you try calling around to the other distributors or were you just going for the closest one?

I don't think you're overreacting at all, especially since they've messed up multiple times on this and your vehicle is unusable during this whole time. They could have at least taken you out to dinner first... :boink:

Went for the closest one, as I presumed time in transit would be shorter. Additionally, not being located in the heart of the southwest might mean lower frequencies of rebuilds. I did not shop around because ICON only lists a handful of "certified" shops. I assumed yet again that each one had met the quality control standards and would be g2g.

Below is a list of the ICON approved shops.

Really lame experience, I'm sorry man. There's gotta be a custom race shop down there for next time. Find out where all the Porsche and Bimmer track cars go for maintenance and you'll probably be off to a good start.

I live in TX and asked around about TPM before rebuilding my 2.5 LT rears. I sent them to Icon directly which should tell you everything you need to know.

ICON no longer offers the service.... hence the predicament.

Regardless, if this thread helps anyone out that lives in the central/ eastern U.S. with this process then it was worth it.

I just had mine done not long ago. Still don't even have them reinstalled. Is this a recent change?

EDIT: son of a b. They changed it at the end of Feb. that sucks.

Sucks you had this kind of experience. From a shop certified by icon nonetheless. Side note, I assume you're stepping up from 650lb coils?

That is correct. Beefier skids, front bumper, & winch that will estimate on a net weight change of ~100lbs, maybe less. My logic is this, with the 700lb rate coils would equal less preload and would have more longevity than the 650.

Everything being added is in my sig.

I'd be interested in your 650 coils if your looking to get rid of them.

The philanthropic side of me gave them to the guy hoping he would know of someone who would be in need of a set....

If you still find yourself in need, I have a very reliable contact in Las Vegas who always comes through.
