ID auto trans...is Aisin 30-80 an A340F?

Newbie T4R owner here, trying to figure out what I just bought. 85 22RE auto trans.

I wanted to confirm the transmission model I have and found something interesting. According this link... http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/parts/
...the only auto trans offered for 85 was an A340F. So, I crawled under last night with a flashlight and rag, expecting to find 'A340F' stamped on it somewhere. What I found was a tag that said...

Aisin-Warner
Model Number:
30-80LE 5000
Serial Number:
85GS-00483

So, I did some poking around the web again this morning and it appears that Aisin manufactures various parts for various makes like, Jeep, Isuzu, Honda, etc.

What I wasn't able to confirm is whether or not this IS, or basically is the same design as an A340F (just made by a different company...like an aftermarket or substitute item)? Or is it a different design entirely?

I found a few comments in various places that suggested that the Aisin was somehow preferrable (reliability) to the 'Toyota' trans. Whether it's better or not isn't so much the issue I'm trying to resolve. But the comments made it sound like maybe these were not necessarily 'stock' units, or perhaps were an option? Again...made it sound like maybe it's a different design altogther?

The trans works, but has a few issues, as does the t-case. So, I will be debating whether to try to fix what I have or do a manual swap. But first I just need to know exactly what it is I have here. One of my worries about jumping into a swap is that, if I have some odd setup now (and not knowing it), then I may end up with difficulties in the swap or an undesirable final drive ratio.

Incidentally, the PO owner mentioned that he believed this truck to be one of those early 'conversion' vehicles. I'm a little hazy as to what that exactly means (my understanding was that some of the early T4Rs were converted trucks - but that's as much as I 'know'), but perhaps this has something to do with having an odd tranny?

Any thoughts much appreciated. Thanks to responders on previous posts on similar subject. I started a new thread here for the specific topic of auto trans ID for future readers.

The pick-up conversions (called the Trekker) were stopped with the introduction of the 4Runner in 84.

Asin sources OEM parts for many Japanese vehicles.
The 30-80LE is probably just their p/n for the tranny. Toyota calls it the A340.

It's very doubtful you have anything but a stock setup.

If both the tranny and case have problems, swapping in a manual tranny and case is not that difficult.

Thanks for input!

I appreciate the input.

I'm sure the swap would be cheaper than a replacement auto/t-case combo. So, when it's truly toast, I'll go that direction. For now, I'll see if I can get by with what I have. Mean time I'll start putting together a swap parts list and hunting them down.

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure you have the A340H and not the A340F.

Aisin part number 30-80LE = A340H
Aisin part number 30-40LE = A340F

To confirm, crawl under your truck and count the fluid pans on your transmission.

The A340F will only have 1 large fluid pan, with one small drain plug on it. The transfer case is a seperate unit, that doesn't have a fluid pan, but it has two large plugs (a drain and a fill).

The A340H is an integrated unit (the transmission and transfer case are integrated together). It has two fluid pans (the large transmission fluid pan with one small drain plug on it), and directly behind it (partially hidden by the crossmember) is a smaller fluid pan under the transfer case with another small drain plug. The transfer chain case (at the very rear of the transfer) still has two large plugs (a drain and a fill).

Take a look and post back what you find please.

Hey

Which one?

Which one what? You're looking at obscure part numbers most of us don't pay any attention to because it isn't that hard. GSGALLANT already told you how to ID your transmission - one pan and an integrated transfer case is the A340H, two pans with a separate transfer case is the A340F.

I'm fairly certain that it was the A340F that came behind the early 22RE motors, but if you're unsure, count the oil pans.

low range problem

So i have the 3080LE and it is not shifting into low range. it is shifting into hi. it is a 94 with solid axle swap. it just started doing this. i thought it might be the shift fork may have bent. but i have read its a hydraulic applied transfer-case. im not sure witch way to head with this. any suggestions what i should look for?
