I'd like some color combo advice

I have a Desert Dune 4Runner and I will eventually be adding some aftermarket parts that will need to be painted. Skid plates mostly. Red is very popular for accents (skids, brake calipers, etc.), and the fact that it is a darker color makes it a good choice for something that will acquire dirt and scratches, but red has never been my style. I'd love to hear some suggestions or even pictures of accessory colors on your truck. Red might still be an option (still welcome to show me red on your truck), but I want to explore other ideas too... Blue (light/dark?), yellow, something unusual like light-green? Let's see what you've done.

I'm kinda thinking a lightish blue might be a little unusual and cool.

I am partial to a dark silver/graphite color its what I did for my headlights and I am getting all of my armor (except skids they are black) powder coated that color this next week, my wheels are the same as well. This is truest color representation i could find in my pics

I'm down with the light blue...anondized looking bits and pieces. That would go well with the desert dune.

I had a bright green for a bit but decided to go red on all the skids, might add a little red to the wheels once I get around to painting them, also with black down the sides

Gunmetal or a black will look good with your color. Too much color , I.e. Red other than small items can be overpowering... IMO

I do agree with you. Too much of a good highlight color can be much too much. Hopefully, I can find an interesting color which is subtle enough that I can use it on a few different areas.

Now that u bring the subject I think silver would look good for your skids and brake calipers etc etc and maybe some blues added in there. Mixing it up won't look to bad,

If you went blacked out bumpers and grill, you could plasti dip your badges, grill emblem and yota emblem on the wheels that color. Plasti dip has several different colors to choose from.

I really don't know much about plasti-dip. My impression is that it's a coating that can peel from rock chips, but I don't know how tough it is. Is that right, or is it pretty tough like a coat of paint? I'll have to research how it is applied, etc.

I would like to eventually get rid of all the chrome, going for a matte black. For the badges, I could do the matte black or I could try a color that is similar to a "dark Desert Dune" or even a dark earth color.

Anything I buy in bare steel will be coated with a self-etching primer before painting. I'll definitely look into the bed liner coatings. I see your point about toughness, but some of the things I want to paint... it doesn't matter how tough the paint coating is. It will either look like a good paint job, or it will meet up with rocks and show scratches. No paint will stand up to hitting rocks. You have a point about the bumpers showing marks from being hit by bugs; skids are a little different.

ETA: What about painting extra parts in tan?? Talking about skid plates, not bumpers. I found a bedliner in tan. I know it will never match the DDune, but it would be slightly "off" and be an accent. Might be interesting, without standing out and calling too much attention - if it were painted green, for example, it would shout out to people "aftermarket/modified". Nothing wrong with that, but I like subtle too

I'm Nottingham fdmiliar with the plasti dip, just the idea. In @ a week I will have some pics of mine up. I'm going to plasti dip badges and bed liner the bumpers. I'm going with black, but I have a white 4r so I'm going for the chocolate dipped marshmallow look!

My rig is black, and I am doing an accent color of dark metallic green. Not on any major pieces like bumpers or skids, but on smaller stuff like emblems, badges, grille, hood scoop, shackles and wheel rings. I am not completely done yet, but so far I like it a lot.

You are correct, it was random :iagree:
I just thought everyone was doing their skid plate either black or red, I figured yellow would stick out like a sore thumb. Which it has haha.

Since there are a lot of accessories, I think I am going to keep it subtle by using 2 colors. Probably gunmetal and a light blue. I am thinking, stuff like badges and large pieces in gunmetal. Too much light blue could be over the top.
