Ideas on treating the piece of trim at the cargo bay opening?

So that little piece of plastic trim right at the opening of the cargo bay is just getting ripped up by my dog every time he hops in the back.

Also, any time he tries to hop in from anything other than from straight behind the truck, he tends to slide across that piece and loose it.

So im wondering, anybody have any ideas at to something i could paint that trim piece with that would provide a little traction and and not get all scratched to hell by the dog?? Something like Rhino Lining seems a bit much, and plasti dip would never hold up to his claws. Anybody have any ideas?

Or I guess you can always apply the protection on the other end as well:
