I'm thinking bout getting an economy car for work and school...cuz I'm pretty sure I'm getting this new job, and I will be all over the Greater Los Angeles Area. Lot of driving...so I need better mileage.

I wanna buy one straight up, so I'm thinking:

1998-2000 Toyota Corolla 4cyl
1998-2000 Honda Civic 4cyl

If you guys have any suggestions or ideas, pros or cons, PLEASE chime in.

Oh, BY THE WAY, I will DEFINITELY keep my t4r as my recreational vehicle

The Honda is less boring looking especially with the Civic EX Coupe. I've drivena few late '90s Civics ('99 was a DD) and they are quite a decent car for the money and with the 5 speed they aren't too slow either.

I got a 94 Civic Del Sol for daily driver. It has 109K and drive like a champ. 30 bucks last me 1 1/2 week. Compare to 65-70 bucks for my 4runner.

I have driven a stick a LITTLE and its fun, EXCEPT in stop and go...and I drive bout half/half freeway/streets...it also gets better gas mileage...

auto is easier, I can do other things while driving...so idk

A 2000 to 2006 Nissan Sentra should be a good fit for you. They are reliable, cheap, good on gas, easy to maintain and do have a fairly good repair record.

I have a 2002 with 90,000+ miles and it just keeps going and going. The 1.8L ain't no drag-racer, but mine is a five-speed and is more than capable of keeping up with the flow of traffic.

However, I notice that it seems rather slow after I take a spin in my 2008 Mustang GT.

I'd buy a Corolla personally. I've always liked them over the Civic, but more because they're a Toyota. They both equally get really great gas mileage so it's really a crap shoot between the two.

I like Civics better because manual transmissions are more common and I don't like driving 4cyl cars without a manual. But like the dude above, its really a crapshoot between the two. The one negative thing they have in common is high resale value (negative to the buyer, positive to the seller).
That being said, the Nissan might be a reasonable alternative, but I would stay away from GM or Ford compacts, and shy away from Mistus or Kias and stuff.

As far as Corolla vs. Civic, I LOVE toyota and would get the corolla but its SOOOOO ugly compared to a civic...lol


I would also LOVE a motorcycle, but I will a. kill myself and b. need to haul stuff around as part of my job

I've decided that if and when I get an economy car, I'm just going to get a civic hatchback...try and get one for like under $3000 and then my truck and car together cost less than what my t4r is worth

Careful with the Civic hatchback especially in your area. A lot of people modify them to the max and then decide to sell it by returning back to stock. I would question if the stock parts were re-installed properly.

For anyone getting the Gen 8 Corolla (98-2002): Get the 2000-02 models. The 98 and 99 models are powered with the NON-VVT-i engine. The 2000-02 have VVT-i.
