Lol, I sadly thought the same. I'm sure it varies around the country but always heard them called vanity plates in the DMV area.
Can't say I've got any suggestions for the OP but I know VA, and would imagine most states, have a web page that allows you to check availability/acceptability of your desired plate (think Kramer's plate in Seinfeld).

I just recently heard that VA has the most vanity plates in the country. I'm guessing it's because it's sooooo cheap to get them ($10). Out here in WA, it's like $80/yr or something. It will vary from state to state I'm sure.

I've seen some cool 4R related ones such as, 4funr (or variation), 4takbo (philipino translates to 4 running), TRD4U, 4x4runr, etc.

$80 a year?! Ouch, expensive. Can definitely believe about VA considering how many you see on a daily basis. They must not care too much on wording as I see quite a few "IH8I66", or the combinations of 0's and o's to make them hard to read.
To the OP, hope your find one that works for you and isn't too much per year. Always fun to try'n decipher the funny ones while sitting in traffic!

I also have a OKC thunder tag.
Here in Indiana they are $40/year. Charity plates depend on the charity, but usually run about $25. I don't have one currently, but ones' i've had in the past include:

Here in WA we usually refer to them as "vanity" or "personalized" plates. Also, we call them "plates" not "tags.":biggrin1:
I have a personalized plate on my TRD Tacoma that is the same as my username. JB is my initials and the TRD is self explanatory. It is funny how some translate mine. For example some (No names mentioned......... [MENTION=68685]Ducmonsta[/MENTION]) read my username as J Bastard, which is hilarious. Others who don't know what TRD is think it says Turd (also hilarious).
In WA it costs $80 for the initial fee, then $42 yearly in addition to your registration tabs for renewal.
This is by far one of my favorite vanity plates on a T4R. I wheeled with this guy in Moab and his rig is awesome.
