If you were just beginning your build again...

Poly bushings too stiff?
What's your issue with 4:88s?

Can of worms about to be opened
, but Poly bushes are not effective with the lower wishbone alignment system that we have, by the very nature that they are designed to deform less. Alignment is much more likely to get knocked out, and NVH is increased. They were amazing on my M3, and the MR2 but they was a different setup (no adjustment cams on the lower arm). In theory they are fine for the rear and uppers, but I prefer the feel of OEM rubber. I know about 10 people will now probably pipe up and say "I have polys and it was fine" I don't really want to do there. I sang their praises too when compared to the old factory bushes.. 3 or so years down the line, and manually cycling the suspension post alignment and I decided to get rid. Truck was transformed!

4.88s just seem pointless in my application. It doesn't accelerate any faster (saw under 0.2 second difference over a standing quarter) and just means that the revs sit higher on a long motorway drive, and I end up using more fuel, and going more deaf. I guess it picks up ever so slightly better 0-30, but if I stomped on it on 4.10s the rears would spin anyway. For me the parts were more expensive than most, as I and to get them shipped form the states, and pay import duty on them, so not an issue as such, just not worth the money for the little to no improvement in my application. (33s)

Do you think it was a fluke or what was it? I've read nothing but good things about it and the research I showed, even from users here, that it seems to be better suited for my needs. What's gone wrong with the 4th Gen ICON's?
---
I need something to make my ride more comfortable versus getting stiffer. Why I was thinking of the ICON's cause that seems to be the least expensive for the quality of ride I need..

Mainly the ucas failed within 2 years. Super loose. Icon said because they were not kept clean and to run them dry. They won't help him and said buy they're new $260 delta ball joints.

The coils and shocks paint don't hold up that well either.

But performance is great.

So other than that, good it sounds like. Everything seems to go downhill depending on what is happening around 'everything'. My dad bought the old Bobby Longfields back in the day, than TrailGear bought the rights from the wife when Bobby passed away. Not they are made over in China or something and don't stand up to what my dad's still do. I just hope that when I go to this stage it's what I can use to keep going out.

I know that SPC LR CA I had ZERO issues ever with it, yet others had tons of problems. Guess i'll see when I make the change in the next year or less..

For me the main issue (and why I went SPC) is the "open" style ball joints. I'm not surprised that dirt and grit gets in there, and they expire fast. I figured that was more of a UK perspective, as with all the wet and mud here, we leave nothing exposed or open!

I replaced the uppers on my SPC after 3 years of daily driving, (but I'm told my truck sometimes picks the front left up under hard acceleration since fitting the V8.. lol) but in all honesty by the time I removed them, they had zero play.

Look up icon deltas. Look like a good design but open on the bottom still.

I run built right UCA uniball. It's a stainless steel uniball. I live in NJ. Not a lot of snow. Some winters we barley get any. But they lay salt down. Im still on my original uniball. Absolutely no play, uniball looks brand new. It's been through mud, water, snow and clay mud. I take care of it. Rinse it , blow it out with air and use dry lube.

Let's say that you were going back in time with all your lessons learned.

Would you keep your build the same?

Would you make changes in components or the order of the things you changed first?

Would you tell yourself to leave something alone?

I'd have done 1Tons instead of Toyota axles.

I would have never used OME rear shocks to begin with. Other than that, I've been happy with the way things have gone.

Actually if I could go back to before purchasing I would have just saved more and got a Jeep Rubicon!!

Danas front and back
Lockers front and back
Disconnecting sway bars
Best approach angles

And all that without any work!! More time with the family wheeling.

Now chew on that. Lol

We're contemplating that move too....easy to build. Slap 37"tires/new wheels on it (no lift; cut to fit), maybe upgrade the front shafts, armor, winch, done.

I'll still build the 4runner....but it would be nice to have a relatively easy build to get a very capable wheeling rig.

I will never run icon. Its sub par to the others. I convinced brother to get icon and it's not holding up at all on his 4th gen. I feel bad about it.

It seems like the elitists prefer king over Icon

SH!T.... You guys are killing me. I just spent two hours last night trying to find out who's got the edge between the two. From what I saw , I was thinking Icons were liked a bit better due to the type of valving. I didn't want to start a new thread of the likes "which is better, Icon vs. King vs Toytec vs...." because that's like asking what's better, Jim Beam or Jack Daniels.

Back to the drawing board....

Neither. Scotch is(or was for me) where it's at. Get your hands on some of this and thank me later.

It's a lot like King. It's expensive, it's not for everyone but it's about as good as it gets in it's price bracket.

Yeah I've been back and forth. Super unhappy with my Toytec Ultimate setup but it's not the design, its all me due to my disability(injuries). Outings involve ...extreme difficulty. If King or Fox offered an all-in-one I would really contemplate that.

Jack Daniels of course.

Great thread!! For me, I should've known that I just wouldn't be able to accept that enough was enough. For years, I said I would never go 35s. But here I am. Now dealing with armor that was bought before a BL. I meant to call Savage Off road this week, but just too busy at work.

Other then that, the bigger issue is how aftermarket parts have changed / gotten better. Panhard bar relocation kit, custom grills, cargo racks, better suspensions, 3D printer fab work..... the list goes on.

If I started over I would have stayed much closer to stock. IMO all the money spent on steel bumpers, ICON, etc really doesn't benefit what I use it for (mostly longer overlanding trips.)

Speaking of ICON, I'm not happy with my setup either. Rides like junk for the price IMO. Should have stayed stock, maybe a different rear spring to combat sag.
