And I agree that ifs sucks but if you’re going to cut it out why waste time with a shitty d44

Have to use what I have available. Also it was FREE.
Makes zero sense to use a Toyota rear and Dana 60 front. Don’t want the weight either.
Not sure where anyone asked what your opinion on DANA 44 or IFS. You must be one with a 6k IFS setup.
Appreciate the helpful insight.
 
Honestly, everyone has their own opinions on what they put under their rigs. I was going with tons, but I didn’t want the width and I didn’t want to shorten the axles. I also didn’t have intentions of putting a d44 up front. Because I daily this truck I decided to keep it all Toyota. Also, because I love genuine Toyota parts.

I would use a front axle out of a Ford F-250 superduty which is a D60 and get a shave kit. D44 is nonsense.

Yeah bro I'm totally sure your 4000lb car with a n/a V6 from 1996 that puts out 100-150hp these days is totally gonna warrant the extra strength and enjoy the extra weight of a D60 :wacko:
 
I am getting close to finishing up the sas on my truck. I decided to go all out and imo do it right by redoing both the front and rear suspension. I kinda went down the rabbit hole of no cutting corners on it while keeping it toyota based. But between all the parts alone I am at least 15k deep. If I start adding up all the other stuff I did to make the sas better, turbo, standalone ecu, etc I would be well over 25k into it i think. Ive done all the labor myself. What I went with was a LC 9.5 axle in the rear and a HP 8". Coilovers front and rear and all the bells and whistles.

I just sourced a HP 44. It has 8 Lug outers so now I'm working on gathering parts still.

I'm in Billings and am looking for IFS Lift Suspension parts for now. Do you have Coils or your take off stuff you want to get rid of? I won't SAS until I have everything ready to go, that may be awhile. haha

Only thing I have left from the ifs at this point is a set of gusseted spindles and 4 spare cvs. CVS I'm selling for 40 a piece. Spindles 100 for the set. I'm over in Billings fairly often so it wouldn't be a big deal to bring anything with me if you're interested

Re reading your original post too that high pinion 44 will be able to be built plenty strong, especially if the truck is primarily used in the snow and mud. The smaller diff will also make your life way easier when you're chasing up travel and a low ride height.

Wow that escalated quickly……

My dream setup would be a coil over SAS, floating axles, and sitting about at 66-68” wide.

Fabbing for me isn’t a problem. The time to do all from scratch is. But if I could buy a kit that keeps it straight forward with all the right angles and geometry already engineered in, that would be a take my money now situation. Something that utilizes mostly off the shelf parts for the steering. But it doesn’t seem like this sort of thing exists.

66” at the wheels, solid full floating axles, maybe LS power, that would just be a dream to go wheeling with. Wagon space, planted, lots of horsepowers…..

Anyways, I’m going to shut up now and just watch from the sidelines at some of the cool stuff you guys build.

Oh man that would be super cool. Stockish width, good enough to drive down the interstate. (All I ever have owned outside of an 89’ Chevy ifs is solid axle pick ups, so I am very aware of what they are and what they aren’t unlike all the people who think coil jeeps ride “rough”…. Rough was front shackled leaf spring powerstrokes and rams in the 90s. Them were rough.

If the articulation can be in the ballpark of a stock to slightly modified TJ Rubicon that would be huge. Maybe 3-5” lift height. A TJ would be a good one to model after. That’s really all I want at the end of the day, I want my 99 Highlander to wheel like my brothers 04’ Rubicon does but have 5 seats and a rear cargo like the 4runner.

I know the whole world is a bigger is better mentality. The Internet is a buzz with the bronco raptor at 80 inches wide….. only way to get long travel on an IFS is to take the wheels a good long ways out I guess. I don’t understand why the OE don’t take a page out of the side-by-side manufacturers books. Maybe it’s a engineering impossibility, but rather than keeping the IFS outboard of a standard width frame rail, why don’t they bring it in closer like a side-by-side? That would get you longer travel suspension without having to have a freaking 80 inch wide vehicle.

That raptor is going to be sick in the desert no doubt. It’s going to be dumb to park just the like the f150 raptor. But raptors can’t physically fit half the places I go. The 3rd gen 4runner at 66” tire width goes where I want. Even the JK feels too bloated sometimes. Most of the time it doesn’t matter, until it’s time to think thin. I had one spot last year the mirrors had to be folded on both in just to clear the 3rd gen!

Sorry to say but I'm going a bit bigger than you'd probably like. When you said 66"-68" I thought you meant WMS to WMS. I'll be running 99-04 superduty axles (I just measured the WMS to WMS to be 69.5" front and 68.5" rear, stock IFS width is 60.75" WMS to WMS), 39 or 40 inch tires with 4.5" BS wheels, the overall track width will be ~83" (stock is 66.5"). 3-link front with 2.5x14 coilovers, double triangulated 4-link rear with 2.5x8 coilovers and outboard cantilever suspension to produce 14" of travel without cutting into the cab. Trying to get it as low as possible, as much uptravel as possible, no compromises kind of design. Obviously this design is very particular to my desires, but nobody made or sold what I wanted so I decided to design my own.

It's been a ton of work so far and there's a lot of details left (nevermind the actual build!), but things are starting to come together. Here are a few screenshots:

Sounds fairly similar to what I ended up building on mine. My wms in the rear is 61.75 and the front is 63. So wider than stock but not crazy wide, about the width of an 80 series. Still tucks the 37s up in the fenders nicely. I spent the better part of a year designing the front and rear suspension to make it drive down the highway better than a stock truck would yet still be able to outwheel and flex most jeeps out there. Rear end I ended up making a cantilever setup with 2.5x8" coilovers that pull around 13 inches of travel, front is 2/5x12s. 3 link front and rear. Sway bars front and rear. I ended up with a 23" frame height so factoring in tire size it comes out to around 4" of lift over a stock 3rd gen. And with the turbo pushing about 300hp at the rear tires it should sing down the highway at 75 like its nothing. But again like the post above I had to design and build nearly everything from scratch in order to pull this off. That being said I used as many standard joints and service parts as possible so I can still find spares in the middle of nowhere.

I am still doing final assembly so I can't speak for it's handling characteristics. But comparing it to the tk1 bar I got in the rear the arms are significantly thinner and the bar is also a much smaller diameter. But based off what I have read that should be sufficient to keep the suspension balanced with the rear. I'll know more about how it drives in the next couple of weeks after I get it put together
