Thought it might be worth posting a few comments for others out there, as this job was not daunting at all. Let me just say, the truck(1990 4runner V6) has been running perfectly. Here are some of the symptoms I found with our ignition switch starting to go:
1) key was very loose in the ignition
2) if moved off standard rotational position(ie different person starting it), the truck would not crank, or might not crank sometimes.
3) cranks slower then usual (ie not getting full circuit)
4) key would turn "very" easily in the ignition
You get the idea. All that was needed to replace the switch:
1) drop the lower plastic dash panel. There are only about 5 bolts to remove. Then, lie it carefully on the floor.
2) the steering column needs to be dropped. There are 4 bolts, but you might get away with only removing the top 2. Watch carefully, not to damage or stretch the wiring harness when lowering the column. You might consider lowering it partially, then disconnecting any wiring that is getting tight.
3) Three screws hold in the switch, which are quite simple to remove with a small phillips driver.

As always, take due caution (as referenced in the factory manual set) when dealing with the electrics in the truck. If you feel uncomfortable, always reference the procedures in the factory repair manual set, per Toyota. Hope this helps others some. Result, truck starts so fast now, it's hard to let go of the key that quick. The key has a lot more resistance when you turn it, and it is more solid in the ignition tumbler.
