**i'm getting sick of being bumped!!**

I'm so angry right now. I got into a potential physical alternation where violence could have taken place. Long story short, I was stopped at the red light while this vehicle who was 200 ft away had every opportunity to slow down when approaching the red light, but the driver chose not to slow until the last 10 seconds where he slams on his brakes. However once he slams on his brakes, he eases on the brake pedal and continue to move forward (the light is notoriously known for its lengthy waiting time until the light turns green) and he bumps into me. I told him to watch it next time, and he became all aggressive then I smelled the alcohol on his breath. I decided to park in the middle of the street and call the cops where they came and charged him with a DUI & I have a minor dent on the back bumper. I have been bumped into too many #@!$ing time, and I'm getting real sick of it.


Now onto the reason why I created this thread; I saw a picture somewhere where this dude had a badass trailer hitch that extended out like by a feet (i assumed it was acting as a deterrent for those who stupidly enjoys driving until they bump into people at a red light). Plus it makes a lot of sense to have something like that because it would take the damage rather than the bumper itself. Obviously you would save tons of $$$ by having this feature. Does anyone know where I can order one? My hitch has a rectangular shape, FYI.

That's what I have. Some dumb chick in a Sentra hit me once and my hitch went right through her radiator and not a scratch on my truck. I got my hitch in Colorado at an RV supply. I'm sure you could find one somewhere. It isn't the most cosmetically pretty thing, but I never worry about someone bumping into me at a light.

I stopped at a light and the same thing happened to me. (had my old CUV then, screwed the bumper and I was pissed so I filed a insurance claim, got a new bumper and thanks to the red light cams it got everything)

Guy is doing 60 (in a 45 MPH zone) and the idiot slams on his brakes and honks like I did something wrong. His radiator was busted and had to be towed away, I drove away with a couple gashes and scrapes on my bumper, he went right under me.

Needless to say, I bet he will not try to slam on brakes again, I'm over idiot drivers and sometimes think about walking everywhere because I am over everyone else being a idiot.

That's crazy man. When I was first bumped into, the male driver's hood was ****ed up by my '99 4Runner trailer hitch & the only notable damage was the cords for the tail lights

I always have something in the reciever - most the time it's a 8in drop hitch - good luck bumping that ha.

Not sure where you are but Flori-duh is like the wild west. It's a hold your ground state so reaching in someones rig in anger will get ya shot. That and everyone has a piece - legal or not so I shy away from the road rage stuff. I think I would have called the fuzz before any contact with the driver. That and any conversation between you and the bumper would be recorded.

Yep I keep a 2" drop hitch in both my Toyotas all of the time. A Class IV hitch w/ a proper ball mount will basically destroy anything that hits it.

In MN the problem is the opposite. People are so afraid of bumping into the car ahead of them at stoplights that they slow down early and stop at least half a car length behind the car ahead of them. Here, as I think is true most everywhere, if you hit the car ahead of you, you are automatically at fault, so everyone now is extra cautious.

Another phenomena is how drivers who find themselves first in line at a light stop way short of the intersection (when there are two lanes going the same direction) hoping the driver who comes up along side will pull ahead of them closer to the intersection. I call this the "Don't want to be looked down upon by someone in a tall SUV with tinted windows next to me!" syndrome. I've seen where neither driver in both lanes wanted to pull ahead of the other and they "parked" so far back that they didn't trip the sensor in the road to change the light. Amusing until horns start honking.

I actually live in LA now, which means I'm REALLY glad have it. Got it in Durango, CO at a place called Tarpley'S RV. Not sure if they have a website. But like I said, I'll bet you could find one at a specialty trailer or RV shop, or have a welder make you something that could fit in your receiver. I've even considered having a welder make me something custom that provides more bumper coverage. Just hunt around a little and I'm sure you can find something.

I hear you 100% My last truck was rear ended FOUR times! The last one was just a few weeks ago by a drunk driver. After the first hit, the hitch went on. You need a lift and a big ass hitch to be safe though. I'm worried about my 4Runner not being lifted yet for this very reason, so a hitch sticking out is the only defense right now

A big ass steel bumper in the back would be best though, wish there was a go-to option...

I want one of the rear hitch things also, but Im gonna weld a spike into it just to make sure it damages anything that cotacts it....which will probably be my leg most of the time as i walk behind my truck not paying attention...lol

Screw all of these jackasses who can't drive. The hitch seems like the best way to go. There are many good front end options, but someone needs to make a reasonably attractive rear bumper that can protect you.

I just had my rear hatch and bumper cover replaced after a Jeep with a trailer slid into me on wet pavement. My wife has been hit several times this way in our Land Cruisers, their ladder frame sticks out past the rear to form the rear bumper, super solid, plus the heavy hitch tubing sits flush below it. Cars that hit her get destroyed, no damage to her truck.

If I had a hitch sticking out like that I'd surely damage a few things, especially my shins when walking around the garage, ouch.

I actually got hit about two weeks after I bought my 4Runner in August. THANKFULLY it did not damage mine, but it left an awesome Toyota logo on his Accord front bumper from my hitch cover.

Michigan here and it seems to be similar. You are automatically at fault if you rear end someone, so that combined with the winter has people has people a little more cautious. Maybe people get used to having to slow down early with the snow/ice?

I haven't driven with the hitch unless I planned on using it, but I think that will be changing after reading this thread.

I had this thought a couple times myself after numerous "almost didn't stop in time" situations from behind. It occured to me about putting something in the receiver. I plan to fab up my own. After seeing those little steps you can buy that install into your receiver, thought it would be easy enough to make a simple one, and make it much more stout. Thought maybe just another piece of receiver tube welded to form the T or even a piece of round tube to make it look a bit better. Figure it could easily be 2 to 3 feet wide and still be stout if you use gussets on the insides of the T joint.

So far its been hit twice with no damage to my runner whatsoever. One was a guy hitting my parked runner and the other a low speed impacted while in traffic in NY. Both times I had no damage and both the offenders Smack up they're bumpers instead. The website even says that they will replace it for free if it should ever get bent in an accident. You can't beat it. It was definitely some of the best money I spent, I highly recommend it.

:iagree: I was going to say this but I couldn't remember what it was called. I don't have one but read about it and all the reviews were positive. How does this thing look on our 4th gens? I was thinking about getting this but don't want something that looks ugly or sticks out too much.

@Shadow - https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sparebumpercom/76381907960?sk=wall - I couldn't find any pictures with 4th gen 4Runners, but I came across a black sequoia and it looked somewhat good with the black body paint on the vehicle.

Honestly I couldn't care any less about how the bumper looks on the back of my truck because to be honest, it is more important for me to be concerned about potential bumper damage than the look of the spare bumper on the back of the vehicle haha.

@Runner - That too. Also, to make another note; I live near the beach (5 minutes away) so snow doesn't exactly take place every year for us haha, on rare occasions we would sometime get snow but not that much! Here, people don't really have excuses for why they bumped into you because they can't blame it on black ice...ice. If any, they won't admit the fact that they were most likely too tired to drive, not paying attention, or they were just being aggressive and impatient waiting for the light to turn green. Good thing that you're going to get something liek this after reading this thread, it's definitely a lifesaver & certainly will help you avoid hassles in the future when you get bumped into.

@Rockwall - Heck yeah. However, I don't need a front bumper because I'm a really good driver (yes I know accidents can happen to me), and I can avoid accidents with ease unless i'm on the interstate...then that's a whole 'nother story

@Parrotthead - Just remember to walk around the back of your truck 3-4 inches away from the body of the vehicle!!

@Bah - That is ridiculous. Too many drunk drivers these days. Punishment for first time DUI's must be much more severe to act as a deterrent for those who might consider drinking and driving again after being convicted of their 1st DUI.
