I'm swapping the subwoofer out in my 4th gen JBL system

and I've gotten this far and wonder how to proceed in removing the actual sub? I've removed all of the screws but the speaker is still pretty solidly in there. Do I just get medieval on it? It's already blown, so I guess it doesn't matter. Thanks.

Same spot, same issue

Gavin, I'm sitting here in the exactly same situation you are; i.e., all the screws removed, speaker cage removed but the sub has no intention of making a move. I've tried using interior trim pry bars, etc. on it; it ain't moving. I see all these pic's of the sub perfectly removed with no hint of having to go "medieval" on it. I'd love to hear something about "popping" it out" without taking a sledge hammer to the whole deal.

I did the swap and added an external amp for it (under shotgun seat) a couple of years ago. Pulled the whole sub housing out because I had to modify it and tap wires from the oem amp.

I don't have an answer for you about getting the actually speaker out because I did not run into your problem (there are no clips or anything like that). That said pulling the housing out should help you leverage that speaker.

Just general sound question.. I'm about to buy a sub and an amp, but my sure what power to get. Right now I'm looking at a sub with 1000w peak and 500w rms. Will an amp with 600w peak and 300rms power that?

i haven't messed with the JBL subs yet, but I would say of you have the 8 or so screws removed from around the ring, you will just need to pry it up. They use a foam stripping around the bottom edge to seal off air, and it can be like removing 3m tape. Just go at it from different sides in a star pattern, prying a little at a time. (although if the sub is toast and you aren't rebuilding it, then pry away. You will only bend the basket)
