In a pickle with suspension, need some guidance.

Hey group, I am in a pickle and need some help.

In an attempt to add some ground clearance and retain the Trd Pro suspension that I like I decided to install the Toytec spacer lift made for the Pro. It replaces the lower spring mount with a slightly thicker one and also a thicker top spacer.

I now have a front end noise. I think it is my sway bar hitting either the strut or the radiator support.

I feel like I’ve been kicked in the gut. The car guy in my feels like I let my 4Runner down. Lol.

Basically I am thinking about going back to stock. Plan B is install a relocation bracket.

I do like the increased load capacity of the rear toytec springs (20% stiffer).

Could/should I consider a 1” taller front spring and increased capacity rear spring? Would I still have the clearance issues?

Alot of Pro owners including myself have installed the Toytec lift. I have no problems with mine.

Yea that is part of the reason I went with that kit. Retain the awesome stock suspension and at a little clearance and more aggressive look.

Seems weird. Best way I can describe the sound/feeling is like crushing pop cans ...

When do you hear the noise, all the time or only when doing something specific like turning? Do you see any marks on any of the components you have listed?

Also, did you do the lift yourself or did you have a shop do it? There could be something loose.

Had mine in recently for the 5k service and they did an alignment since it was off. After the service I was hearing a clacking/popping noise on sharp turns and bumps. Went back and they stated the lower control arm bolts were not torqued correctly.:tsk:

just take your skid pan off and look... youll know if it hitting as there wont be paint on the driver side (thats where mine was hitting).

Or just turn your wheel and with a flash light glance in.

If this is like other typical issues just go buy some large thick washers... Youll need 4. Undo the radiator support bracket (one on each side) and add the other washers to where the bracket meets the horizontal radiator cross member.

I dropped the skid and found this on drivers side support. But when the truck is parked it looks to have more than enough clearance. Does it really move that much?...

Although I added some grease to the support to see if it would transfer to the swaybar. It has not happened.

It definitely should not be hitting. Here is the link to the video of the lift if it was installed by a shop correctly. I havent heard the trd pro having this issue so please reach out to me with some more photos and I'll get down to the bottom of it for you.

As others have said, you should have zero noise or clearance issues with your set-up.

To respond to what you posted above. If you add a 1" taller spring to the front of pre '19 Pro suspension you will be around 2" of lift. This is the route I went and really like the set-up, especially for the price. I added Bilstein 6112 600# 14" springs and got around 2.5" of lift, and 1.25" rear springs. Good luck and hope you get it figured out.

I plan on going back to my installer and they are going to check it out. I think I am going to see if they can put it back to stock. At least until my warranty is up.

It is sicking to me as a car guy to take a truck like the 4Runner and make it worse... I did this.

Something is not right so don't give up so quickly. That top isolator sure is sitting in there kind of funny.

Did you put in a sway bar relocate spacer? If you did you need to space out your radiator supports too.

I went back to my installer today and they checked it out. They were just as stumped as me. Again everything was tight and nothing seemed to be rubbing.

The shop boss said he thinks it the valving in the shock. I made another appointment to return it to stock.

He also made it seem like if I go back to stock it will still make the feeling/noise.

I suppose it kind of make a little sense. If the piston is designed to ride in a certain region of the shock and now I have added 1” +/- to that it now rides in a unintended place. Not sure if the Pro Bilsteins have internal valving.

To me it definitely feels like something is making contact. But I know Toyota had issues with the early pros Bilsteins and to my knowledge that’s why they switched the Fox.

I also emailed Toytec and asked about the relocation bracket. They said they have never heard of the swaybar contacting anything with the TrdPro spacer lift.

I kind of wonder if I can find some Fox take offs for a good deal???

You need to go back and tell that "shop boss" he's as dumb as a box of rocks! That's total BS!!! Did you look at my post to my lift I referred you to? I'm lifted 2.5" on stock Pro shocks with a longer and heavier spring. Mine are as quiet as stock. Many other people are listed on stock Pro shocks. I think you need a new shop that knows what they are doing our learn to wrench yourself.

What issues did Toyota have with early Pro Bilsteins??? They used them for 4 years and I haven't heard of any issues like this. I have two Pros, a 16 and a 18, and they have no issues. Not sure what prompted the switch to Fox but my guess is the Tundra and Tacoma were already using them.
