inconsistent output from subwoofer

I recently had some audio work done on my 2008 - a new sub box made and the amps were moved around (were going to put under seat but ended up not fitting).

Now, my subwoofer goes in between quiet and normal. I would think a bad connection somewhere, right? But wouldn't that be between off and on? The speaker wire from the amps had frayed a good bit and about half of it is now missing.

I'm going to take it back on Wednesday to have everything checked. Just looking for some suggestions or ideas to be armed with.

Also, and what seems like it could be important - a lot of times when the sub is not working (low volume, but not off), if I turn the volume on the radio way up, the sub suddenly kicks in (gets proportionately much louder, and i can then turn the volume back down and the sub will stay loud/"normal" for a few moments).

Any ideas?

Signal sensing is not good, or bad wiring on the speaker leads, got some pics of the component . That was used?

The amp may not be set up properly causing it to kick into a protection mode of some sort, just another possibility.

Everything is used, but only by me - have had the setup since 2010, just had new enclosure made and amps were disconnected/reconnected - they shouldn't have needed to change anything but who knows. No problem before the work was done

i misunderstood you at first. this is the only pic i have, of the speaker wire frayed and separated at the amp.
