Input on building my own storage boxes

Hey guys,
In my spare time I do some woodworking, and I'd like to build my own storage for my 4runner. I'm thinking something similar to this.

I bought a used 2014 SR5 with 3rd row seats. I never use the 3rd row seats, so I'm thinking of completely removing them and replacing everything in the rear with a system similar to above.


One issue I'm struggling with is the wasted space to the rear of the wheel wells. On the passenger side I have my 110V inverter plug, as well as a DC out. I'd like to keep those exposed without installing an extension. On the left side I have wasted space that's not really big enough to hold much.

I want to try to minimize the vertical height, hence the removal of the seats. I want to make sure my dog has lots of room when we're 4wheeling and hiking!

Does anyone have a storage system they can post pics of they're happy with that they've managed to utilize this space around the wheels effectively?

There are several threads that address storage boxes and containers that you can search on. Antman has a couple beginning with a basic box that he modified. I'd start there.

The thread the OP posted is the best home-brew version I've seen.

I can build one, but I've been completely unable to find the type of roller hardware that TruckVault uses (even though I have sliders at home from an earlier effort). Also, I worry about reinforcing the drawers to maximize their security (realizing that nothing will be foolproof).

So yeah, I'm in on this one...

In that empty space behind the driver wheel well l've mounted my fire extinguisher and pack the remaining space there with some bags and a towel.

I built my own low profile drawer (link in signature) that has worked well. I would store the jumper cables in that spot just forward of the wheel well because if your battery goes out and they're in your drawer, you're not getting to them as the tailgate won't open. Just pick up a couple of small stuff sacks from REI or someplace and put gear in them and toss them in the voids and call it a day. I wouldn't stress about building around the wheel well.
