Inside lever for hood release / cable undone

I went to pop the hood as the first step for some other work today. Off to a bad start as the hood release lever moves too easily and the hood does not unlatch. Cable has come off the lever...

Should be an easy fix, right ?

Well after fiddling with it for way too long on my back with trouble light and with long nose pliers and pointy end vice grips I got it jammed in the release lever securely but not the way the Toyota designed it.

It works now so I'm calling it done. I'll make another run at it someday if anyone has a hint or two.

Granted this is an old thread but somehow mine came off loose so I had to yank it out and pull the lever manually. Does anyone know how I can put the hood lever back to its original condition? If I cannot figure it out - I will ask my dealership to do it for me but wanted to ask you guys first.

This also happened to me in my '04 with the gas door lever but I never fixed that one...I just left it as it is but this '07 is my daily so I cannot deal with the sight of this level that's sticking out!

never crawled under the runer dash yet but on my Tacoma if the cable comes off the pull lever under dash, you just pull the lever out and then put the cable back onto the lever "first" and then release the lever and go under dash to slip the cable back onto the cables catch slot. there was no clip or anything to hold it in place at all except the cable position itself

sometimes people do things and the cable gets pushed to the side and this allows it to slip off the slot it sits into, normally the cables bent shape is spring like to hold to in place
