Too quiet
So i installed the 22" 12586 magnaflow muffler today on my girlfriends 2013 4runner, and so far its too quiet lol. It did seem to get a little louder the more i drove it so I'm hoping that trend continues. If not, not sure what to do, maybe i shoulda got the 18" lol. I guess "too loud" and "too quiet" is highly subjective.

Yup, highly subjective. IMO the 12586 is night and day from stock. Try going WOT down an on ramp that's when it comes alive. I've had this muffler on my last 4 4Runners and will be adding it to my current ride shortly. Give it time and you may just appreciate the subtle growl.

It gets louder with age! Mine is almost too loud for the wife a this point, which just happens to be just right for me and the kiddies!
Every time I get on the gas hard my girls say "That sounds cool Dad!" and I get the Wife Stare :yawn:

Curious about reliability, thought many said MF exhaust for TFR was junk?

Basically it is all very subjective. On my 1996 4Runner I had the 22" magnaflow muffler which is the same one we would use on 5th gens just on a different engine and granted it does sound great but all it did was made me crave more sound front it but if you didn't want to be loud in certain circumstances it was nice because you could go easy on the throttle. On my new 5th gen I put on the magnaflow 12256 18" and couldn't be happier. I literally aim to hit that "boominess" at between 2-3k rpms sometimes when I'm driving just because it sounds so good. If you're trying to get a girlfriend or wife approved muffler you could probably get away with 18 but if they are not so tolerant then 22 is your best bet but you're going to wish you had the 18 IMO. Also the performance is great with both! Hope this helps anyone looking to buy either of them.

Stay away from blow master. I ran a couple of there mufflers on my 07 Tacoma (40 and 44 series). They drone like crazy and both rusted out on me. Now I realize I was running 2 of there loudest mufflers but the drown was just overwhelming at times.

If you want something healthy but not ricey the canister needs to be almost oem size which is super 70ii flowmaster or delta series 50 both are for large block suv . Everything else on a V6 just doesn't sound right IMO !

If you make the exhaust louder then you have to make the stereo even louder IMO! Agreed that "aftermarket" V6 exhaust just doesn't do it and sounds poopy.
I'll stick with stock noise levels and stock reliability on the huge stock muffler (that thing is freaking humongous!!!). Unless you've found a magic way to re-flash your computer and get a proper tune (fuel map) with a low-back-pressure exhaust, then you will likely decrease power in the end while living with an annoying drone for what? To show off your "now less powerful than stock un-tuned V6" to the V8 guys? Never quite understood that - but I'm obviously the oddball :bigok:

Ended up installing "Flowmaster 817569 Force II 409S Stainless Steel Single Rear Exit Cat-Back Exhaust System with Mild Sound" almost 3 years ago, haven't had any issues at all. My experience, no increased MPG, no increase in HP, just proper attitude adjustment :biggrin1:

I have an 18" magnaflow and a TRD CAI, sounds rad. It certainly doesn't sound like a v8, but what did you expect?
I will concede that is probably more loud than some would like in certain parts of the power band, but I dig it, especially when you really stomp on it at around 3500-4500 rpm

All show, no go. All bark, no bite. Seems to be the underlying theme here. 100% your call for sure - it's only money and noise after all. I just don't get it (the Louder but not Quicker part of it - I'm odd like that!).

Exhaust on a V6 = Silk hat on a pig.
My FJ came with one of those already installed. It rotted off after one east coast winter. I went back to a stock system and I have no complaints. I'd spend my money on a lift, tires, rack, lights, sliders, bumpers, pretty much anything before an aftermarket exhaust. Back in my carbureted days, an exhaust, intakes and carb(s) was high on my list but it just doesn't tickle my fancy anymore. Does it really help without also upgrading the intake-side of that big ol' airpump?

The Wraith is hard at work on proving just this!
He's systematically dyno'ing his T4R with incremental upgrades. I'm not 100% that he will do a run with exhaust but w/o the CAI (already did the opposite, and is currently awaiting another run with both CAI & Exhaust) - but maybe he will for grins?RE: "The Sound" - Just don't like a loud V6 - even if it means +10RWHP. I could accept a little beefier sound than stock, but much beyond that is just plain annoying and (as mentioned) "Bark without bite".
