Installing my tranny cooler tomorrow. Basic question..

I've went through all the install threads because I hate being a pain in the ass. However my big question is about the lines..

- it says you only disconnect one line? Shouldn't both the feed and return be disconnected? This kind of confused me.

Also, best mounting seems to be with the inlet/outlet ports on the side which hoses would I run to them? (ie - return line top, feed line bottom)

If you want to run the external cooler in addition to the radiator cooler, then only disconnect one line. If you want to completely bypass the radiator, then disconnect both.

Also, I've read differing opinions on whether to mount the cooler with ports on the bottom/side/top. IIRC, it won't make much of a difference either way. I mounted mine with the ports on the side, send on top, and return coming out the bottom.
 
I mounted mine the same way Jacob did. I really only disconnected one though, the send line. Then I shortened the return line on the radiator and used it to loop the internal cooler by hooking the other end up to the send side of the internal cooler.
 
Just disconnect both lines, the whole point is to bypass it in case the pink milkshake happens. If you only hook up one line then your still susceptible to it.
 
both my ports are on bottom i didnt think anything about it till i installed it. It wont be a problem begin on bottom correct? i been driveing it and didnt see any issues.

Why are some guys still keeping the rad in the loop? I thought the whole point of this was to avoid the pink milkshake issue? Seems to me it only drops the trans temp 10 degrees or so by adding an external cooler.
 
You don't want to mount the cooler with the ports down. Air will get trapped at the top of the cooler and won't go back down and out to the tranny. This will lessen the surface area of effective cooling, as fluid is no longer filling the cooler entirely.
 
I just did mine last week. It seems a lot more intimidating than it really is. Keep BFADs write up handy, as well as that pic above, and you'll be fine. I mounted mine so that the send line comes to the top, the fluid flows down to the return line, and then back to the tranny. The hardest part for me was undoing the clamps on both rubber lines where they attach to the metal lines...not a whole lot of room. It all comes to you when you actually get under there and see for yourself, not just looking at pics. Good luck.
 
Nothing is easy with my vehicles it seems. lol

I mounted it with the ports down. I was going to mount it the way it's written up but I didn't realize that I had to take off the fan shroud to get the zip ties through. I didnt have time to mess with it and take it off. I do all this outside on the street with no garage so lack of light is the enemy. Side note - how easy is it to get the shroud off?

Basically, I have it mounted to the two bolts holding on the latch with the supplied brackets.

Whats the best way to get the lines off the steel lines coming from the trans? I guess undo the clamps and pull the hoses off after slitting them?

I'm going to finish it Sunday weather permitting. Right now it's mounted with the hoses tucked up under the bumper, temporarily tied in place and capped. I'm taking the time to degrease my under body shields too since they have 262k miles of **** all over them. :lmao:
 
I mounted mine with ports on the side and didn't have to take my shroud off. I just had to finagle (sp?) my hands down there to secure the zip ties. As far as taking lines off, once I moved the clamps, I slit the wires and they peeled right off. Now that you have the cooler installed and wires down there, it shouldn't take too much longer to do it. Just make sure to remember to check ATF level...I almost forgot!

How did you get your hands between the rad support and the back of the radiator. There's like an inch - maybe two of clearance. Did you loosen anything?
 
I got it in today finally after realizing what a dumbass I was with the mounting. Did a shake down run and no leaks or anything. Topped off the fluid and good to go.

Have to button up a few small things but for all intensive purposes I'm done. Thanks for all the help guys.

Btw - 263k worth of schmootz on the front cross member sure makes a mess of things. My hands are going to be dirty for at least a week. :lol:
 
I got mine installed today too. Went pretty well. Had to go get some extra 3/8 hose for my mounting location but it wasn't a big deal. I lost maybe three tablespoons of fluid when I disconnected my lines. Made me a little nervous it was low but it was actually fine.
