installing speakers or subwoofers in the back of a 3rd gen

I was wondering if it were possible to install either a set of either 6x9s or two 10" subs in the rear side panels in the cargo area. I know, on my parents old 87 4runner, the rear speakers were in the back near the base of the rollbar. Could this be done with my 96?

6x9's might be able to fit on both sides but 10's will not. The only side to put a 10 is the passanger side if you do not want it to stick out too much. Driver side does not work because of the gas filler.

i know JL audio makes a box that is specialized for a subwoofer that installs over the wheel well on the passenger side. I think they can get pricy but its up to you. Ive seen people make their own sometimes too.

I think theres also space on the box itself where you can cut a hole in it to fit an extra speaker too if you wanted to do that.

I think it would be a waste of effort to put 6x9s all the way back there. They won't add much beyond what your rear door speakers already provide.
Definitely go wtih subwoofers. You'll have to so some serious fabrication if you really want the subs in the walls (or spend serious money on a prefabricated stealth box). It can be done on the passenger's side for sure by utilizing the pre-existing cargo compartment volume. There's also space on the driver's side, but it's somewhat limited with the fuel filler back there and you'll be cutting new holes into that panel if you go there. It's easier and cheaper to throw a box on the cargo floor.

While it won't provide "knock your socks off" bass, I know Kicker makes 6.5" subs (CVT I believe). You could get a small amp (mounted under the front seat) and a pair of those, then fab an adapter to mount. Just an idea, I've never used the small subs, just noticed them in an audio shop this past week.

Here was my solution to that problem. I built a cargo drawer and amp rack together. The front holds the sub and high end amp with the front door crossovers. the rear is a 22" drawer I can throw whatever in, jumper cables tow straps, first aid kit and such. I built it low enough so I can use the factory side compartment and 12 volt outlet. The side sub box holds a single kicker L7 8" sub. I have 600 watts rms going to and it sounds great! I was pleasantly surprised. Plenty for me.

Thanks! It took a lot of measuring but it was worth it. It really only took and afternoon to build. It took longer to carpet the thing. The drawer really works well to put junk in and by hiding the amps my mutt can ride back there with no worries.
