Instrument Cluster Question!

Hey guys so my tachometer isn't working (checked to see if it was the sensor but the sensor works) so I am ordering a used one that has 218k miles on the clock.

The question is... Will the mileage on the cluster I am getting stay on OR will it change the mileage to what I have on mine?

If the mileage stays from the previous vehicle what steps can I take to keep track of the miles I put on the vehicle and what to tell the inspector at the inspection place?

Sorry if I'm getting a bit confusing

It'll take the mileage from the old vehicle, but I'm not sure if anyone has figured out a way to turn back the miles on these trucks.
Fun fact: On the five speed, if you are driving, turn it off, bump start it, the speedo and odo will not work, aka free miles.

It sucks man because I would really like it to read the mileage I have, because I'm from Texas and we have to get inspections... So what do I tell the inspection place about the miles?

Although, you guys are lucky. If we had that up here in Ontario, a car would fail after 5/6 years from rust. It is unparalleled how fast salt eats away at vehicles. You gotta fight it tooth and nail, and honestly, an annual inspection forces you to keep your 4runner running forever.

Oh yeah, annual safety and emissions inspections. It's very fun.

And SOMEONE figured it out: I came across 3 separate 3rd Gens when I was shopping for mine that had pretty low miles (110k-130k) that showed they actually had close to 300k miles when I ran theCarFax.
It kept pissing me off, but then I realized that if 3 separate vehicles at close to 300k ran and looked that good, then this is most definitely the truck for me!

No idea how to roll it back, though. Can you simply remove the odo from your existing (broken) cluster, and place it into the 'new' cluster?

What year do you have? 96-98 = analog odo, 99-02 = digital odo.

You should be able to simply tell the inspector that you got a new cluster, and show him the receipt and old cluster if necessary. That way he'll get an idea of how many miles were driven since the installation, and he won't mark it down wrong.

You should know in Texas any vehicle over 10 years old doesn't have to have a working odometer or reading. Luck and enjoy! :cowyboy:
