I'm currently in the process of getting hosed by Geico over the value of my recently totaled 4runner. The problem is that they can only pull comparables from vehicles on sites like Car Guru.. autotrader..etc. None of these have any mods or maybe just a basic lift and nice wheels.

I really need to get comparable vehicles to prove the value of my 4runner.. any help? I have been cruising these classifieds for almost 4 weeks now!

That sucks man. I use USAA and when I considered switching to Geico for a lower rate, my cousin that worked in insurance for many years told me to not even consider it. She said the low rates were great until you actually needed coverage.

Anyway, what are you asking for? Modified 4Runners for sale?

For what it's worth, my wife's car was totaled a couple weeks back and USAA used "CCC ONE™ Market Valuation" to assign the value. We actually got back a little more than I figured the car was worth.

Geico is the insurance for the person who cause the accident that was at fault. Not my insurance. They are trying to say they can only give me $9100 and that the modifications don't really add anything that they can cover. All their comps are basically stock vehicles so I need comps for modified vehicles hopefully similar to mine :(

That first comp was perfect.. I had sent that one and they ignored it.. go figure. But its actually comparable in miles. I had 162k which is why I am not using the ones with higher miles cause they tend to take a huge drop in price.

I sent you a PM...

Have you tried getting help from your insurance company? I've had situations int the past where I requested help from my insurance company to make sure that I was getting a fair deal from the other company. You do pay them every month, so hopefully they can help out!

Also, you might have a tough with getting value for mods. But can you keep the vehicle to part it out and sell the mods to recoup some money?

I know my insurance company wouldn't work as hard as I am or understand the value so I am doing it :/

I already plan on keeping it and I know I will lose money but I want enough to buy a new runner with similar miles and condition then some of the big ticket items like bumpers and suspension. There is a lot I can salvage but it pisses me off that someone can pull out in front of me and almost kill me then have the insurance screw me over.. feels like I am being robbed right in front of my face and I can't do anything about it.

Unfortunately many insurance companies don't value off road mods very high if at all. They consider suspension wear and tear so they expect it to be replaced and so on. That's the only negative about putting money in off road items because you'll never get back what you put in (rarely anyway)
Same with people who rebuild their motors in cars and have 10k in a motor but the car is only worth 10k. The best I could recommend is going through an outside appraisal service perhaps

That is definitely not a fun situation. Sorry to hear man. Keep pushing them and hopefully some of the comps help make your case.

Good luck!

$9100? Seems like their giving you something for the modifications because the book value is a lot less than $9100. I had my 2000 totaled and got $7100 which was $1000 more than I paid for it. I put about $2500 lift stereo rims etc. I bought it back for $900 and transferred all the parts over and parted out the rest. It was a little work but it paid off. It did suck going through it though so you empathize with your situation. Insurance companies suck.

I am finally getting some closure on this. Last week I had asked why they were only using the low comps.. with no word I sent 7 more comps yesterday and the average cost was $13,500. They called me back and we were finally able to agree. It will feel good to start moving forward on this!
