intake upgrade?

Why do you need to upgrade the MAF? I have a K&N cold air intake on my 97 Limited. I probably have the same MAF as your 96 and I have had no problems for 5 years.

Well I want the volant and its 99-02 because the maf is diferent.

Why is the volant better? Does it somehow push more air in? If you go to K&Ns website you can see the DYNO results for before and after with the K&N. Plus with the K&N which costs $225, you don't have to replace the MAF with a different year.
The Toyota computer system that controls the fuel air mixture might not "be happy" if you swap out the MAF for a different year.
Has anyone else done this already?

I don't know why a closed air would be better AND if it is better than why not just stick with the stock intake and do the "deck-plate mod"

I am not against the other company. I think these devices are pretty simple but I don't know if it is a good idea to swap out the MAF with a different year. Especially since you can just get a K&N which is the #1 brand for cold-air intakes.

I dont want to star a flame war or anything and dont hate me for stating what i bealive is legit. but the enclosed intakes perform better because they are protected from the hot engine air Volant is completely enclosed except for the hole on the side where the fender well is where cool fresh air can come it therefore it can be classified as a true CAI.
I dont know im obsessed with cars and read tons of performance magazines I've noticed that MOst of the newer high performance cars have a stock CAI designed just like Volants. (Cone filter enclosed in a box)
K&N may have that heat shield but it still allows all the engine dust and heat come in from the top.
The Deckplate mod is fine if you wanna save some cash but it too has its limits with having the hole in the front where it is blocked by a headlight to get direct air.
To answer your qestion as long as the MAF is the same shape it should bolt right on. there are two holes in the intake piping that just have to match your MAF

No flames necessary. The volant looks like a nice intake. I just didn't think swapping out MAFs was necessary.
I did not see a link to any Dyno results on the Volant site I came across so I don't know which one produces the most horsepower. I suspect they are the same.

yeah id be interested in seeing some numbers on the volant intake too! maybe ill have to dyno mine some day is it cheap?
