This is a 18.5" bbl shotgun but I've installed these in other rigs and set them for M4s. Top quality rack and will easily swap into new vehicles.
This is in a 5th gen 4R mounted to the cargo area coat hook bolt holes with some hardware modifications to the BSR OEM hardware, specifically, the middle velcro / aluminum bracket has been removed, FJ Cruiser D rings have been added to the sides, a fastex buckle assembly has been added, and a lock and cable have been installed. Refer to the above link for photos of the setup as it comes from BSR.

No, it is very secure and it faces rearward, so it would be impossible for the weapon to come out under braking .
The rack is really impressive quality. When I say I've installed multiple ones, it's because everyone who has looked at mine has bought one.

I kept that pictured shotgun in that rack in my Xterra all the time. When I replaced the Xterra with a 14 4R TE, I kept the shotgun in the rack all the time. I was keeping it racked all the time in my new 17 4R, but I recently removed it and now toss it up there for travel or camping trips only. I never had an issue with it being loaded and racked all the time, but realistically I'm not going to need it to go to the post office, so it's probably safer to leave it at home.

Just wondering if the rack is adjustable for something smaller like a pistol AR sized gun/subgun.

Yes. In fact if you search for it on this site, you should find a photo I posted of a 11" SBR in there. I don't have the image link right handy, I think I uploaded it to the forum directly.
The rack itself is adjustable for width of the vehicle, and the padded holders (there are 3, but I removed 1, so my picture shows only 2) are adjustable along the entire length of the rod. You can put all three as close together as you want or space them out to accommodate optics, etc.
All components are secured by set screws so once you set it up, you snug them down, and it's good to go.

Here's a few more pics of the rack showing the set screws for securing the inner / outer bars for correct width; the side mount; and the visual appearance of the rack from the rear. With the window up the rack and weapon are almost impossible to see from behind. Bottom picture is with window down, because it is too dirty to give a good visual.
As you can see in the first two pics, there are multiple adjustment options to allow the rack to sit very close to the headliner, and you can flip the padded gun brackets upside down to move them even closer. I have the rack set where it is because the weapon I carry is the shotgun pictured above, and it's length necessitates the rack hanging slightly lower from the ceiling. If I ran a SBR or even the full size AR pictured above, I could move the rack even higher and it would be that much harder to see.

So this thing just anchors into the plastic retainers of the handles? I'm not understanding where it's mounted? I mean it's only an AR so even in an impact you're looking at maybe a roughly 40lb weight trying to bust loose (I'm sure my math is off on the increased weight when acted on by inertia), so I suppose the factory plastic retainers could handle that?
honestly its no heavier than having a bunch of clothes you picked up from the cleaners on one of the hooks. should hold it no problem

I would say it depends on the rifle you're storing up there. My REPR is a hefty gun, even with a 16" Spiral Fluted Barrel. That's before you count any accessories someone might add. Additionally clothing is typically lighter than your average AR15/AR10 and is in a different package so I wouldn't be as worried about a couple pounds of fluttering clothing vs. 7lbs of plastic and metal being slung at my head.
Also I'm not so much concerned about a panic stop as much as a collision. It's the same thing about cargo nets using very weak spots in the vehicle. Your dog might only be 20lbs but the amount of force at say 65mph in a collision imparted on your cargo net barely secured to the vehicle will send Fido's corpse into the back of your head killing you both.
That's why I am curious how and with what hardware it's connected to the vehicle with.

The coat hooks in the fifth generation are mounted solidly to metal, using welded in nuts, and 6mm bolts. If you unbolt the coat hook on each side you can then replace it with this rack. The rack is so solid that you can grab it and rock the whole truck back and forth.
The mounting brackets that come with the rack are designed to be drilled into the metal supports for the headliner.

I'm still pondering on making the jump into a 4Runner from my BMW. I noticed on the TRD's that there's a small space behind the 2nd row seats, in between the seats and the pull out tray. It looks like there's room underneath where you store small tools, etc. I'm assuming there's not enough space to fit an AR is there?

Okay that's good to know, I wasn't sure if the coat racks were bolts or screws into plastic. If they're bolts then four 6mm bolts will be more than enough for the rack for a gun or two. I haven't had a 5th gen headliner out in a while so I couldn't remember how they had it set up in the rear.
