Finally got it all installed and turned out very nicely! Even with an AR and Mossy 500 mounted, they are out of sight in the rearview mirror. Now to get to go to the range and put it to use! Trying to upload some pics but can't get the uploader to cooperate with me.

Do you use only the one bolt that goes into the hangers on both sides? If so, does it not want to rotate with weight of a loaded gun on one side or the other? Just curious how solid it is with a gun on one side or the other?

Correct. Just one bolt on each side into that coat hanger spot. Really no issues with it turning at all. Even with a fair amount of weight on the side, it hold steady.

I drive with the rear seats folded down and when I need a long gun with me, I jam it between the front passenger seat and the folded down back row. It's really hard to see, especially when I toss a fleece over it.

This is a 18.5" bbl shotgun but I've installed these in other rigs and set them for M4s. Top quality rack and will easily swap into new vehicles.
This is in a 5th gen 4R mounted to the cargo area coat hook bolt holes with some hardware modifications to the BSR OEM hardware, specifically, the middle velcro / aluminum bracket has been removed, FJ Cruiser D rings have been added to the sides, a fastex buckle assembly has been added, and a lock and cable have been installed. Refer to the above link for photos of the setup as it comes from BSR.
Thank you for this thread. I have been looking for some type of molle plate system that i could mount an 18.5" shotgun to. This is a way better solution. Just ordered one on ebay for $89 shipped

This is good to know. We need a rack like that. The 4Runner is small and our compromise was to stack a folded M1A1 Carbine on the wife's lap (next to the thermos of coffee).
Not ideal.
Because everyone knows that rifle is rarely the first choice for anything.

Are you sure? I've been to Alaska twice now with that shotgun stowed in that rack, and Canada Customs has fully searched the truck twice during the probably dozen plus border crossings (proper paperwork filed to keep it legal) and I verbally declared it to the officers every time. The first time I know they checked the gun because it was racked with the action open when I got back to the truck and I never rack it action open. I would think if that manner of storage was contrary to law, they'd have told me.

Oh know, you're totally fine with customs.... its the conservation officers that you need to worry about. Up in Canada 8 out of 10 conservation officers are only doing that job because the were denied entry into the RCMP or city police force. they have a chip on their shoulder and have a reputation for being professional a$$ holes... last year the RCMP awarded them control to arrest citizens now and ever since this happened there has been a massive over overwhelming court back up for cases such as "gun barrel was 4 mm longer then allowed due to front sight modifications" or "guy was arrested for indecent exposure while pissing in the bush while 15 miles off any noted trails". just a joke
Last year I did a overland trip of northern Manitoba. I took my 45/70 lever marlin. gun was locked in my truck with me while I was sleeping. got a knock on the door at 2:00 am from 2 park rangers. they took my gun away from me because I was "intoxicated" with a fire arm. I had a few rums around the fire and apparently according to them I was so hammered I was a danger to society... not to mention they left me alone in bear country without a gun. I wrote a letter to the municipality and took it to court. I got my gun back and the province had to repay my legal fees. its only getting worse up here... pretty soon you won't even be able to fire anything larger then a 22.
Its such a joke in Canada with the gun control

Hope to get this rack for my 19 sr5 premium. Of course it will have to be locked/or empty rack when the kids are in the third row. Will be nice to have a long gun for certain uses. Will say I’ve been trained and carrying for about 10 years now, since I was “lucky” enough to experience and survive a mass shooting in Illinois. Moved directly after and now vote pro 2a. Whatever risk I’ve increased by carrying is laughable compared to the feeling you get being completely helpless in a scenario like that. Cops just come to cleanup after. The guy with the “hero“ anecdote should be a little more sensitive to those who have suffered violent crime in my opinion. Not everyone reacts the same way.

Wow. Crazy. Not sure what to say... congratulations on surviving? That sounds sarcastic but I'm serious.
I respect your decision to carry but I want to make sure we're on the same page here (I'm a cop)...
Assuming you "tactically retreat" from the shooting and go to your truck and grab your long gun and then go re-engage the shooter (all of which is perfectly legal and is the right thing to do), you are placing yourself at risk for being shot by responding LE. Make sure when the sirens start arriving that the rifle hits the deck and you have your hands up and away; really if you can throw that thing 50 feet away it would be best. LE isn't in the "give warnings" frame of mind for active shooters anymore, it's a seek and destroy mission. If you are holding a gun on a scene like that when LE starts pouring in you are going to be shot a bunch of times right away - especially if you are holding a long gun, because the presumption will be the guy with the long gun is the guy who is the active shooter.
Here's to hoping that was a once in a lifetime event, but keep that in the back of your mind so as not to compound a tragedy.

On a lighter note, Big Sky now has mounts to replace grab handles (pictured here on my Taco). Won't work with 5th gen 4Rs since I believe the second row grab handles are clipped into holes in the metal substructure and not bolted in, but should work with other applications. I stumbled across the mounts by accident on E-Bay, they don't appear to be on BSR's website yet. The model # is "OSH-SBR" which I have to assume is "Oh Shit Handle". Very solid and puts the gun in a good position for deployment from the driver's seat. On the Taco the bar is far enough forward that rear seat passengers don't hit it with their heads while sitting normally, though caution is needed on entry and exit.

Only two I am aware of are the cargo hook nuts in the hatch as described in the rest of this thread, or using the BSR hardware that comes with the rack to drill and install to the headliner.
