Intermittent white smoke

Hey all so I’ve got a question on the ole’ runner having an intermittent white smoke issue. A little background was back in last July went off-roading and hit a puddle, some water may have gotten sucked into the intake or something because it ran rough for a minute and smoked a little but then was fine. The next day we went on a family road trip up through Idaho and Montana from Utah so it was a long trip. After the first 5ish hours we stopped for lunch and didn’t start the 4runner back up until maybe 45 mins to an hour later. Upon startup there was white smoke for a bit but cleared up pretty quick. Never smoked again the rest of the trip and never had any other issues until today. This past weekend we went on another road trip ~4 hrs down Friday, and then hit some light trails almost all Saturday and drove 4 hrs back today. No issues again with any of it, got home parked for a couple hours and started it up to head over to a Super Bowl party and it smoked for like maybe 5-10 seconds and then immediately went away. As far as I can tell I haven’t had any noticeable coolant loss in ~8 months. Any tips to start to diagnose it? I assume compression or leak down test first? Or any ideas on why it would intermittent do that on startup?

Does the white smoke smell sweet, coolant would.
If you think you're burning coolant, compression or leak down tests are the place to start.

Yes it smells somewhat sweet, figured I’d start there it just seems so odd how random it is
