Intro and how did I do? 2003 Black Sports Edition V8

New 4th GEN Owner, not new to site or 4Runners. Would like to introduce ourselves in the 4th GEN section.

How did I do? I bought it because I knew if I walked away, the next guy to see it would have taken it home. Asking price was $12K. Listed on market for 2 days.

2003 Black Sports Edition, 4.7 V8, 113K, original owner with flawless leather interior, center diff lock, and one of my favorite parts...plastic flares and cladding!

Found this on Craig's List, in retirement-golf community, these original owners were snowbirds (retirees) that live 7 months (winters) in AZ, and 5 months (summers) in Kansas. This truck has no rust. All maintenance done at Toyota Dealer since new. Toyota Owner's online confirms faithful 5K oil changes and all recommended Toyota maintenance. Timing belt/water pump was done at 93K and BFG Long Trails have +75% tread. Clean Carfax with no accident history.

I purchased yesterday (10/15/12) for $11.2K. Money well spent IMO...

Things it needs is front passenger door cladding is loosening and rattles at high speed (easy fix - new clip), a bulb is burned out on the ac/outside temp display (cheap but pain to fix), carpet could use a clean, and a few scratches on the plastic bumpers front and back...minor. The black paint is flawless. Funny thing is, RECALL for new floor mats has not been done. So, will have new mats next time I go to the dealer...ha.


And BTW, here is my 3rd GEN... 1998 Desert Dune Limited with 206K miles and counting! Also purchased bone stock from Craig's List (14 months ago).

Which reminds me, I need to update my 3rd Gen thread with all the mods over the last several months!

What did I have to give up? My 1994 Mustang Cobra that I've owned since 1998. Sold it to my father, keeping it in the family!!! It has 94K original miles.

We are now multi-generation 4Runner owners!!! This will be my wife's new daily driver. She loves me right now.... This will replace her 2001 Honda Odyssey. No more mini-vans. My daily driver is a 2006 Scion tC with 125K. I drive a lot.

Downsizing from four to three cars. It is a tuff economy you know!...ha.

Sounds like a good bargain on the 4th Gen. Personally I don't care for the plastic fenders. But hey, there's a reason IHOP has boysenberry and strawberry…

I got mine from a retiree too.

Feels good to downsize cars eh? We went from 3 cars + 1 Motorcycle down to my 4Runner and the wife's Ford. Nice and simple again.

Nice clean purchase! Phoenix is a great place to pick up a solid used vehicle because of all the snowbirds and how they baby their cars.

We are really excited to have another T4R in the family.

3rd and 4th Gens are very different. Especially with the V8...ha!

The 4th Gen will be our Road Trip vehicle and family truckster, and the 3rd Gen is the Wheelin'/Camping rig.

Guess one is not enough for me...

I'd say you did well. I paid $11k for my '03 Limited V8...and I didn't get any maintenance records to speak of, had about 15k more miles on it, and the leather is not in as good condition.

The bulb behind the LCD is much easier to get to than you think. Piece of cake.

Colormatched grill and blacked out headlight bezels (no chrome)
+2006 LED tail lights
+2010 Trail Edition wheels, and oversized Duratracs
FJ Coils, and keep XREAS until shocks need replacement
Daystar spacer to level front
Stubbs sliders
Bajarack (full length rack)
Maybe new head unit (has JBL but no bluetooth)

I recently got rid of my 3rd gen for a 4th gen (04 V6 Sport), and I don't regret it at all. I love the simplicity of my 3rd Gen, but the 4th Gen is night and day more driveable as an every day truck. Looks good though!

Just one question though... your original post said the timing belt was done? I thought the 4.0L is a timing chain?

I bought the 4.7 V8 which has timing belt.
